Mac Users: How to Make MP3 Discs that PLAY with Full Names Showing
Hi:
I've been experimenting making discs for the car. I tried iTunes and various settings on Titanium Toast. I finally was able to make a disc that plays perfectly and displays full names of Artists and Albums and Song Names, but you have to have Titanium TOAST. Don't use iTunes to burn the disc. Open Toast and: 1. You are going to make a DATA DISK, not a Music Disk 2. Select the ADVANCED SCREEN on the left side of the Main Window 3. Select ISO 9600 4. Before dragging files, push the SELECT button on the Main Window 5. Select the SETTINGS button 6. Under NAMING, select ALLOW MACINTOSH NAMES (Note: If you want this change permanent, select DEFAULTS and allow the system to save this setting for the future. If not, just select DONE.) 7. Drag your Artist Folders directly from your iTunes Music Library until you fill up the capacity of your disc (650-700 MB for CD or 4.3 GB for DVD). 8. Then select the Burn RED BUTTON and burn your disk. I've done mine at 8x and 24x without any difference. I hope this helps the Mac people out there. iTunes will not allow you do make a disc that displays the names so well. One thing: I don't know why, but each song name ends with a space and the number "1" after each name. It's not bothersome, but if someone can figure out how to get rid of it, so much the better. One Last Thing: WARNING
This all presupposes that all of your music in your iTunes folders are MP3's. If not, you cannot use those songs in this type of disc. So, convert all your songs to MP3 BEFORE making this type of disc. Note, however, that converting to MP3 somewhat lessens the quality of the original music files. Most people cannot tell the difference, but some people can. So, take care in deciding whether to convert the music files to MP3. You are warned. This should not be a biggy for most people. Larry |

Hmmm ... I'm pretty sure the space 1 at the end of the name is a long file name truncing. After burning this way do the id3 tags scroll the full dialog on the headunit?
Haven't tried burning from the mac yet, so I'm curious. |

There are other threads on this forum that indicate iTunes works just fine

Nothing scrolls on a BMW iDrive screen. It is static data.
But, since the iDrive screen is so long (35 characters or so), it can accommodate a very long line of information. I don't think the space and #1 has anything to do with truncating since no matter how long the song name, the 1 appears even if the song name is only one word long. So, that's not it. As to the iTunes works comment above, if you are able to get all levels of information to appear in full length lines without truncation in upper and lower case letters, please tell me exactly what you did in iTunes to do this. That's the key to my instructions -- not whether iTunes will make a playable MP3 disc. It will, but I can't get it to make all the data show up. I could be missing something, but I dont' think I am. Thanks for the info.
When I first picked up my car I had burned a disc in iTunes and had the same experience. Haven't played mp3's since in the DVD. This should help change that.

I guess I'm confused, but maybe the way I use itunes is a bit different. All of my albums are stored on a network location, and then my itunes library just references them instead of copying them locally.
I tried last night and was able to create the cd through itunes (on my mac) and all of the id3 info came out fine. But the id3 tags on the mp3s were all perfect to begin with. Is this different for people who physically store all their songs in the itunes db? I also don't have idrive either though, I'm just seeing the info on the headunit like I would an RDS station. |

iTunes works fine for MP3 id tags on a PC and we are 2nd class citizens in this regard. Would be real surprised a MAC based version would be less capable.

Is there a simple way to convert them? Is it possible to copy all the files, and convert half? (so have a library of MP3s, and the same music library in the original format)

When you are in iTunes, you go to the ADVANCED menu at the top of the screen. You will see CONVERT SELECTED SONGS TO MP3.
You select whatever music you want to convert and then push this Menu Item. But, be warned, it is going to permanently convert your AAC, etc., music to MP3 files. So, if you don't want this to happen permanently, you should COPY your ENTIRE iTUNES MUSIC LIBRARY to some other location or a DVD(s) and then do the convert. If you later decide to go back to your original music format, you can delete all of the MP3's from the iTunes LIBRARY and then just use your DVD copy to bring your music back into iTunes using the ADD TO LIBRARY command in the FILE menu. I would try converting one song to MP3 and see if you like the AAC version more than the MP3. Most people can't tell the difference. Many people can, especially on classical music. So, try it out and see if you can live with MP3's. Obviously, if you are using an iPod or other MP3 Player, you will get a lot more music on that device as an MP3 file than the original format. Good luck. Larry in Los Angeles |

Sweet. Thanks for the help. I'll check it out this evening. Good call on saving a backup to a DVD.

my understanding with full name is that unless you rip the song yourself, there is no guarantee that the full name is there. What I am saying is if you download mp3 songs from web, there are time when a file will not show the full name coz the original owner did not use full name when ripping the cd.
