Chicago.... Disabled vehicle capital of the US?
Driving from downtown-ish to Plainfield at evening rush hour is never pleasant. However, last night I noticed traffic was much worse than usual. I'm sure part of it might have had to do with people leaving early for the weekend, as well as the Sux-Chubs game. There are always at least one or two disabled vehicles on the left or right shoulder on the way home. That's always going to be a given. And, everywhere you have a disabled vehicle, you have traffic slowing down, whether it's actually physically impeding traffic or not.
Well, yesterday I counted 7 disabled vehicles on 55 between Dan Ryan and 294. Seven! And as far as I could see, only two of them were due to flat tires.... Amazing. Is it the economy? Are people putting off normal maintenance and repairs? Pushing the limits of their gas tanks? What is it? I can't even imagine what it would have been like had the temperature actually been in the 90's.... Anyway, I have yet to remember a commute where there wasn't at least one disabled vehicle, and now seeing 7, it really made me wonder if there was something actively going on to cause this situation, or if 55 was just some anomaly. |

I think a lot of people just push their cars and try to put off service as much as possible. That being said it was probably just an anomaly last night, but ive personally never seen that many disabled cars on the road at once..thats crazy

Some may be attributed to road conditions. Chicago has terrible maintenance on its roads. For example, one year I got 3 flat tires within 3 months all on Lake shore drive. It was a war zone.

id say that isnt too bad prob just the volume of traffic. when your bored in traffic like i am start counting cars just to get a baseline, then compare

Well my experiences on the Kennedy and Reagan have been no better as far as traffic is concerned. Plus, that won't get me to Plainfield.
