What car fits this mold?
A buddy of mine is looking for suggestions for his next car:
Budget $12-23,000 (depending on year and mileage of course) -It needs to be reliable and reasonable in regard to maintenance and repair (This means don't suggest a B5 S4) -It needs to have a solid bang for buck performance ratio -It needs to seat 5 and have space to put stuff (doesn't mean hatch, just a good sized trunk and what not -It needs to be all season capable (Not, oh just throw 500lbs of sand in the back and have chains on the tires and drive 2mph and you'lle be fine)

Negative, too many blown engine, suspension, smoking turbo mishaps...

My winter beater is a Mazda 3. Reliable, sporty, cheap to maintain... it handles like a car that's twice its price and its a tank in the snow. It's also pretty fuel efficient and you can get a new one, nicely equipped, for about $20k in the U.S., I guess.
A used Subaru Impreza, hatchback or otherwise, could also be an option. They are reliable and although relatively expensive to maintain, are practically maintenance-free. Plus, you have the added winter benefits of AWD. The only combinations of sportiness, reliability, convenience and overall performance that come to mind are the Mazdaspeed 3, the Subaru Impreza and perhaps even a newer Sentra SE-R. Your friend will likely have to make a compromise because a lot of his clauses are essentially contradictory. |

They're reliable, plenty of performance potential, seat 5, and do great year round.

Besides what was listed above...
Legacy GT could also work. 07's have fold-down seats and can be had for low 20's easily. A little bland but a good car. Audi A3 3.2 may be available in that price range by now. Volvo S60R have power, but I don't know about handling. Infiniti G35x, especially if you can find an 07+, though probably can't get manual transmission.

Sounds like your buddy is looking for a cheap car that has the performance and reliability of an expensive one, and those can be mutually exclusive. Good luck...

WRX, assuming it has cheaper maintenance costs than an STI or Evo, and the insurance will definitely be cheaper.

Well considering part of the criteria was all season capability as in, winter, summer, spring and fall... I highly doubt any of these are options, oh and the part where an S2000 or a Corvette seats 5 + cargo I am kind of missing, is it a fold down 3 seat in the back?
