New member saying Hello

Hello all! I have been a lurker on this forum for the past 12 months. I have also been looking at buying a new BMW for the last 12 months and have used this site as a valuable research tool. I have test driven basically the entire 3 series range and finally settled on the 320d.

Last Friday my partner and I ordered the 320d with M sport and Innovation package also pro nav. Needless to say I'm incredibly excited about the car arriving in the next 12 weeks!

I do have one question to anyone that may have purchased a new BMW recently. Did you look at or maybe purchase some of the after sale's extras? do you think there is any value in the paint or leather treatment options the dealer offers? or is this a bit of a gimmick?

Thanks guys and looking forward to contributing.

Congrats and welcome
my neighbour had the same car with the 18 inch wheels....looks lovely and he was absolutely in love with it too...
in reference to after market stuff; i have heard if its the right product it can be very good, most of the time its silicone based and that may not be so good....never tried it my self though

Thanks for the welcome guys,

Z320i
The after market products I'm referring to are supplied by a company called "Motor One" They're based in Melbourne and it looks like they have the contract for providing all the after sales care products for new BMW's.

They offer a range of products but the one I'm looking at is the so called "high performance paint protectant". This product adds a coating to your new paint that supposedly "Oxidizes organic compounds" and protects the shine of your new paint. I'd like to think that I'm not overly susceptible to marketing hype but it does sound rather interesting. I'm in a coastal area and salt air is a factor so I specifically stayed away from sapphire black (even though it's dead sexy) and went with Space Grey.

Yes 12 weeks is going to be agony! the sales man told me they quote 12 because if it turns up in 8 the customer is happy. I'm hoping it's more like 8 weeks. I also got the 18" double spoke rims with the car... they look the business! once I get it I will put up some photo's.

Cheers.

Hi Burto and welcome!
I well remember how it feels settling into the wait until the car finally arrives - ours was ordered in late Feb and arrived mid June - agonising!
As for the extras the dealers are pushing after the sale, there's from my observation two schools of thought - one basically says all of it is overprized rubbish and you're better off getting some of it (if you really need it) once you've got the car from an independent shop.
The other opts for one or more of these things (paint protection, leather protection, tinting, etc.) to be done by/through the dealer for peace of mind and the knowledge that if something goes awry, they only have one contact to deal with. We belong into this latter camp. We had our 320d tinted and leather protected before taking delivery, and haven't looked back. For our thinking, when you spend that much money on a means to get from A to B, the comparably small expense on these items doesn't really justify the shopping and running around necessary to have it done elsewhere. And that convenience is incorporated in the asking price by the dealer or their offshoot, of course...

RE: the after sale extra's run for the hills, they are all a complete rip off.
If you want paint protection, etc. Get it done elsewhere, you will pay one 10th or less of the amount the BMW aftersales people try and push for a better product.
The leather treatment can be worthwhile, but only if you have white or beige leather that absorbs colours easily (as some members have had leather replaced under the so called insurance policy contained within the leather protection), if you have a dark colour such as brown or black it's a complete waste.

Congratulations and Welcome ...

I wouldn't bother with any of the extras unless like mpower suggested you have light colour interior or you would rather not deal with getting it done yourself. I don't beleive in paint protection because I'm a fanatic and prefer to detail my cars myself. My understanding is that the "Motor one" paint treatments also have to be re-applied or inspected on a yearly basis at additional cost so I don't see the point. Plenty of detailers out there!!!

Enjoy..

Awesome, thanks a bunch gents, the interior is Dakota Black so not much chance of color getting transferred, and that's awesome to know about the paint coating possibly needing re application and inspection yearly.

In that case I'm going to just look after the leather and paint with good third party products.

I notice on the BMW website that they have a bunch of BMW branded do it yourself products for cleaning interior and exterior and also cleaning kits for wheels etc.

Has anyone used this stuff? is it substantially more superior to off the shelf premium waxes and treatments etc? probably not I'd say.

Cheers

Welcome Burto.

Looks like ur car will look exactly the same as my. GOOD CHOICE might i add, u have great taste

I dont really think the BMW product are really any better than the ones u can get off the shelf. I think BMW get their product from a 3rd party company and re-package it. Eg, Leather lotion from dealship smells, looks and works exactly as the leather lotion from Auto Glym leather care cream which is a England company. Meguiars also have great product too and is available almost everywhere. Of cause, u can go one better and order professional stuff off the net if u wish too.

The BMW branded stuff is generally inferior to most premium off the shelf products there is out there.

Honestly you don't need to worry about pain protection if you wax your car every few months. However if you do want it for extra peice of mind there is a few detailers around that can do it for a few hundred every year for you.

I'd say Fox Red wouldn't take colour...
The only colour leather i've heard about absorbing colour from blue jeans on a hot day is the Platinum Nappa Leather.
That said jeans only tend to bleed if they are very dark blue, brand new & haven't been washed yet.

Hi Burto,

I'm new here too and got the space grey 320d as well. But I only had to wait 4 weeks.

I will be picking up my car next week and can't wait, I also didn't get any of the aftermarket stuff either, too the horror of the sales lady . I just don't think I need to spend $3k on that stuff.

I hope everything goes well with your delivery (and mine of course) and hope to see you round.

Thanks Brett! 4 weeks is AWSOME! I really hope that mine only takes 4 weeks! Was your car built for you? or did BMW have one to your specs in the country? If it was built and delivered in 4 weeks then I'm crossing my fingers!

Thanks!

No it wasn't built for me they just had the configuration I wanted on the boat, sorry...

I can't imagine having to wait any longer than this, I'll let you know when I take delivery.

The worst thing about the BMW purchase is all the negative comments at work about how rich I am. Doesn't matter that I am one of the lowest paid there, maybe they should try saving and investing instead of going overseas every year for holidays.

Well that was just very lucky Brett! how awesome though that they had the one you configured! As for the negative comments mate, I'm sure they will all be forgotten when your cruising through a picturesque country road in utmost style and pure unadulterated driving bliss!!!

And I coped a few negative comments at work but most blokes at work realize that hard saving and an understanding partner (Who is getting her overseas holiday next year!!) hardly adds up to being mega rich.... Any one who seriously gives you stick for choosing a BMW is Jealous.... just drive it past them at every available opportunity

Cheers.

Yep, it does sound like jealousy. Maybe I'll rock up to the work xmas party in the new ride...

Now I just have to teach the wife how to park without the gutter scrapes.
