Earthquakes ported vs sealed

Hi all,

Has anyone sealed the underseat boxes when installing the Earthquakes SWS-8?

All of you have mantained the original ported box?

Thanks in advance,

For example I can read here that the ported box was kept, not made seal:

I would not do it. A woofer in a sealed box has to travel a lot farther to have the same output as a woofer in a properly vented enclosure. There isn't that much clearance under there.

Boxes and drivers are also designed differently for ported vs. sealed applications.

I will open that hole and Dynamat all the way to the door, not just the box as I have right now.

I tried it three different ways - completely sealed, dynamatted, and open. Best result seemed to come from leaving the port open but stuffing the enclosure with dynamat. There are compromises to each one, but the dynamat with the port open seemed best to me. Also depends on your amp and any additional equalization you may be using. If you want a lot of response below 50 HZ, you will need to add a true subwoofer in the trunk. The underseat speakers are not subwoofers - they are mid bass drivers.

Sealed --> flat response, less loud, takes up less space.
Ported --> peak [ported] response, louder, takes up more space.

Ambelede, again you answer a question you don't understand. Unless you have measured the response, you have no idea if either of those is right. In actuality, neither of these statements is neccesarily accurate. A sealed box too small is usually misaligned with a upper peak and a too-high rolloff. A vented box done well has an extended flat response before rolloff. Either, with cabin gain taken into account, usually has a peakiness.

Sealed boxes tend to be far more forgiving than ported boxes though. Ported boxes have to be perfectly built. Also, I think that sealed boxes are more appropriate for an underseat subwoofer.
