Verizon Increasing Early Termination Fee
Read this on engadget. Pretty sizable increase from the former $175 ET fee.

Kinda expected since most people are getting smart phones (Blackberry, HTC, etc.) these days in lieu of just a cell phone. Those phones cost Verizon and other phone companies lot more money to subsidize. The recoup time is usually about 12-18 month time frame. They don't want people to take home $500 phones for $99 (or free in some cases) and then decided to bail out after three months.

Why is that? I've got to choose between ATT and Verizon late next year.

I have no issue what so ever with ATT. Granted I'm not much of a socialite and on my phone all day.
The day Verizon decides to actually catch up with the rest of the world and using GSM is the day I might consider them. Until then, ATT is really the only option. I also never have any issue with connection and coverage. No dropped calls, sometimes I might get a choppy cell, but then you just hang up and call again. Not really a big deal and the versatility of being able to change my phone at my own whim is more than an adequate price to pay for such a minute drawback.
