Oil and Oil Filter
If I decide to get the oil changed on my 328i at a local shop, is BMW really obsessive about the type of filter and oil that I use? It's a leased car. Thanks.

FYI, if curious on pricing I did mine today. I used the recommended castrol from canadian tire (7x$7/L it's on sale) and a filter for $21 from the dealer. So about $85 tax in.

Why not get it free from the dealer, when your car's maintenance is covered for 4 years, 80000 km?

+1 on questioning early oil changes if it's a lease (and assuming not keeping of course).
I do mine every April and October, regardless of km.. it's usually around 8-10k. |

I live 100km from the dealer and it may be more convenient to get my oil changed locally. But do I need to use a BMW brand filter to avoid any potential warranty problems or will any good quality filter do? Thanks.

If you choose to do your oil changes outside of the dealership, I would recommend that you use the BMW oil and filter. The oil that you get at CT is not approved by BMW. There are some oils that you can get outside of the dealership that are approved, but they are generally more expensive, and I am almost 100% not available at CT.
There are many, many, many discussions and individual feelings regarding oil. In the end the oil should be tested and approved to BMW LongLife 01 (LL01) standards. Such oils will have this clearly stated on the back of the bottle. FWIW, from the dealer, the filter is $18 and the oil is $8.41/L (you need 7L, BTW). Total is about $77 if you choose to do it yourself. The dealership should charge around $130+tax to do the oil change (the last time I went it was $123 + $6 enviro fee + taxes). |

the LL01 just means its long life approved. If you change your oil regularly (ie every 5k), the long life rating is not as important as the other qualities good oil should have.

Now before everyone starts chiming in, I have worked with companies that manage their fuilds in engines via oil samples and diesel engines can make it past 15,000KM. Diesels are harder on their oil than gas. BMW (Audi, Porsche, Mercedes) have had these intervals for years and not only recommending it but are standing behind it with a warranty, why does everyone treat it as if BMW asking them to pour sand in the engine? The intervals were set because BMW has tested them, more than once I'm sure. |
