Custom Heat Shield for DCI

A little Saturday Project

It's still not CAI (Cold As Ice) but I think it'll block some engine heat..

looks interesting....btw i hope your Cold As Ice thing was a joke because it stands for Cold Air Intake.

i dont understand how it is blocking any hot air i see it funelling the cold air from the stock snorkel more towards the dci but not really creating a sheild at all

haha come on guys, of course I know what CAI is...cold as ice was just an acronym pun

It does 'guide' air in from the stock snorkel (and the scoops push a ton of air directly on the filters), but I also think it effectively shields the filters from the hot air from beneath them.
-The filters suck air...and they used to suck the hot air from beneath them (put your hand through the filters and feel tons of engine heat/air)
--Now, filters can only suck the air above the shield, and a little from above the intake manifold. Other than that, it's [mostly] coming from the snorkel.

I'm not saying this is going to reduce IATs by 50degrees, but it [I]should[I] help by a few.

It's a really easy job to fab up..just 22g sheet metal, tin snips, brake, and spot welder (rivets would work) I can put up some dimensions and stuff in the DIY section.

I applaud the DIY work, but I am willing to bet money that you hurt yourself more than you help yourself here. Even if you lower IATs a degree, you are cutting off the DCIs ability to draw air from 135 degrees or so. The will increase your WG duty cycles. Next, heat is transferred by conduction and convection. All you are doing is stopping the convection, but the heat transfer from the metal sitting there will be huge and right next to the cones. I cannot see a single way this could be a good thing.

I fully agree about the transfer of heat through the shield, as the shield and filters ARE very hot after the car's warm. However, I think the filters would be close to equally as hot without the shield. Pretty much everything under the hood of these cars gets veryhot.

There is still plenty of clearance beneath the filters, apx ~1.5"

What I was essentially trying to create here is a 'box' inside the engine bay where the filters can get air. I figure with the shield in place, the air drawn in via scoops is forced onto and around the filters... With the custom scoops and this 'shield', I think it works pretty well....

That said, I admit I have done absolutely zero testing or experimenting with this, just pondered in my 21 year old mind.

There is nothing wrong with DIY'ing stuff. I am a huge fan and applaud the effort. I just think you will be losing more than you gain by doing this. If you want to go with a CAI, go with UR or STETT. I have done some testing on CAI versus a DCI and there is a difference.
