There was a good article in European Car about Turner building a race-spec 3-series. About the roll cage... if you hit your head on the bars in daily driving due to an accident... especially w/o a helmet... well, you know...

Yes, my brother is about to build a 335i race car as a dedicated Nurburgring track machine - motorsport/touring car dashboard, bare interior, welded cage, lifeline fire extinguisher system etc etc... the engine will be a replica of my road engine - 470bhp/470lbft flywheel with a Quaife diff and AP Racing brakes all round. The only two mechanical differences will be something like a KW Motorsport or Ohlins suspension as opposed to the Bilstein road-setup on my car, and the use of a flat-shift Quaife sequential manual gearbox
The 'Ring car should be approximately 350 - 400kgs lighter than my road car...!! The evolution of my road car has been done with this race car project in mind - I've spent a considerable amount of time and effort researching, refining, and testing the durability of the 335i engine and its associated hardware. My car in its current form has done well over 100 hard and fast laps of the Nurburgring, and all without any faults or limp modes... The project will take the best part of a year, probably starting in ernest in September or so. ..
