Smile Lowered Suspension - Take II

Well, after a full year of dithering, I'm off to have my Eibach Pro-kit fitted tomorrow.

To follow are some 'before' teaser pics to be going on with.

Notice how the beautiful, timeless and elegant lines of the E92 are compromised by the humongous fender gaps....

I will get back to you with the 'after' pics in due course

Yves

PS Yes I know the car is dirty but the weather is horrid isnt it.

Cool, I'll await the after pics with some interest (waiting for Pro Kit Springs to arrive for mine too)

How much are you paying for fitment if you don't mind me asking? I take it you're sticking to standard dampers for the time being?

Perhaps during your year of dithering, you could have applied some quality wax to your car........I look forward to your new 'lowered' look together with some evidence of wax on the paintwork perhaps.

Hope you've got a GSOH btw.

PS. Great wheels, still a fav. of mine.

Steady Guys, you'll hurt the old girls feelings !

Actually, underneath the grime is a proper Zymol Glasur set up, fastidiously applied by me over 4 days ! Its as shiny as a new pin after a wash, Zymol Autobathe naturally

I've just got back from go karting where I have injured my back in a high speed encounter with a barrier Hope the new springs arent too stiff tomorrow.

Yves

To answer a few more questions.

1, Yahoo's man is fitting the springs for me to the stock dampers. Will see how it goes and then may upgrade to Koni Yellows if necessary.

2, Its too cold for Zymoling at this time of year so it will have to wait till spring.

3, I too prefer the 189's over the 230's, hence why they are on the car.

Well, job done and first impressions ?

Why didnt I get this done a year ago ! Car looks so much better and get this, it rides better too. Astonishing.

Oh, and another thing, it doesnt need an alignment. Straight as an arrow, no twitching or strange feelings through the chassis.

Will try and get some piccies up later.

Yves

Nice car ztlm, 189's look even better when they are placed properly in the arches...

So here are the after pictures.

Subtle drop on the rear and perfect drop front.

V Happy.

Very nice mate. 2/3 of an inch makes all the difference...

You're right it wouldn't need an alignment as you haven't changed the front dampers

The front looks spot on, but the rear could do with being just a tad lower.
As Yahoo says, it will drop some more over the next few days

For me at least, the ride comfort is actually better. Yes its firmer and you would do well to avoid rougher bits of tarmac where possible ( thats only good driving practice anyway and for any Bikers out there its second nature ), but its never crashy or jarring.

The secondary pogoing thump you sometimes get from the back end seems to be gone too.

There is significantly less body roll which in turn makes the front end feel a bit sharper.

Actually, just this simple set of springs has highlighted how horribly compromised the stock M Sport set up is.....

I believe that the OE M Sport dampers are better suited ( with RFT's on original rims anyway ) to the Eibachs than the standard sponge cake springs.

Interestingly, my original front springs were banana shaped when taken off the car, after only 16000 miles of steady driving too. Not uncommon for weak OE springs Mr Brownspeed said.

Mr Brownspeed also did an alignment check for me before I left. Spot on, no adjustments necessary.

I think this is a must do mod, there arent really any downsides other than a small uplift in insurance premium.

Finally, for anyone that can justify the long trek north ( as it was for me ), I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Paul and his workshop for any work you might want doing. I'm sure Yahoo would say the same too.

Does that help ?

I am very tempted bythese I must admit, I have recently ffitted 18's and feel it's just a tad to high, so these would get rid of that 'tad' I would say. Glad to hear it has worked out well.

Get those bloody funflats off. (spend the extra £150 and get some proper tyres for your proper car, conti 3's, because you're worth it...)

I've been deliberately driving through potholes to revel in the nice single solid 'thwump' I now get instead of the clattery-crash-pogo-wobble-step-out of previous.

'Joy' - a BMW without runflats.....

Yes but I would need al four tyres at a cost of around £600.

The truth is, the ride quality is so much better on the Eibachs the RFT's are actually tolerable !

Sell the rfts afterwards on ebay.

There's a lot of people who want to stick with em and will pay well for em...

BMW have spent years steadily ruining the suspension to try and make rfts tolerable, if all it took was some springs surely they'd have done it already??

I'm not sure how ride quality could be improved by changing springs only, but maybe you are right and its just that BMW would judge your springs 'too hard' for general release, but if they are OK for you then thats a winner IMO.

Believe me, I'm astonished myself but better it definately is. Maybe the fact I'm on 18's helps too.
