Who said RWD can't handle in the wet?

Actually, I don't know of anyone personally who said that, but I just wanted a catchy title.

Anyway, I went to an autox event this past Sunday. The sky was clearing up, but the course was still wet with some standing water due to the heavy rain the day before. I ran my 335i in our regional street tire stock class, SK1, which includes SS, AS, BS, and FS, and times are indexed. Well, I was expecting the car being difficult to drive in the wet condition, but to my surprise, it actually handled quite well. The key for driving fast in the wet (at least to me) is to be patient, especially with all that low end torque from the twin turbo engine. I found myself braking in the straight line (no more trail braking), then just coasted through the sweepers, and rolled back onto the throttle later than usual as the car was almost straightened out. I ended up with a 51.4xx scratch time, and won the class. Second place was an AS S2000 with a 51.0xx scratch time, but after applying the index, I came out on top. Thanks to the generous FS index.

Here's a video of my quickest run, the winning run.

p.s. How do you do embedded video from youtube??? Anyone know?

After autocrossing heavily for a few years...I just cant get excited about it anymore...I want the real road race track instead. BTW, back in 2000 I got 3rd place in CSP in my B5 S4 Sedan...for the season....SF Region

I feel the same way. I started autocrossing at the end of 98, and was doing it heavily since then until 2005. In 2002, I was doing both CSCC (LA region) and SDR (SD region). I won the CSCC regional championship in 2001 and 2003 with my Prelude in STS and STX classes respectively, and I also won the SDR regional championship in 2002 with my Integra in STS. I kinda stopped going to autox starting 2006 as I was trying to turn my Prelude into a HC H2 race car, but that project never finished. Track days are getting more expensive (considering the entry fees, tires, brakes, fuel, etc.), therefore I'm thinking about going back to autocrossing, and hoping to get my 4th championship jacket next year.

BTW Anthony, thanks for doing the embedding for me. I'll try it out next time.

Vicent...nice driving man...

You go way back ha... I stopped AutoX when I sold my WRX in 2003.
Are you still involve with wheel production?

AutoX was fun but after 2 young kids..it was somewhat tough..

However, AutoX with Speedventures brought a whole new meaning to AutoX..without working the course. It was like a practice day without working..

See you around buddy..

Naw, this is wet. SCCA autocross racing on the melting ice on Lake Huron last winter:

(Yeah, I gave up auto-x for track days long ago, but in the winter with the whole lake to play with, its build your own race track with miles and miles of run off room):

And, no RWD doesn't do too well in extreme conditions like this.
