Whistling noise when cold!

All,

This is really a question for 318D or 320D pre-facelift owners, but I have noticed that my diesel makes a light whistle -like noise when it is driven from cold start. It might be coming from the turbo (not sure though) but as soon as it runs for a very short while / revs more than 1.5k it will begin to disappear and is completely inaudible.

Done a few Google searches on this issue and it is apparently from the turbo and is completely normal. However this is more focussed on older models. Can anyone tell me if they have issues with theirs making a similar sort of noise from cold start when cold?

I have a 320D 163 - it always did it, almost sounds like an approaching cop car.

Either I've got used to it, or it doesn't do it so much now there's some miles on the car.

I have also noticed this, it happened to me today, I think this is due to the weather, ie -3 c today ?

Its more of "whooshing" noise when the turbo kicks in than a whistle ??

I didnt actually drive far only a few miles, but can someone confirm if this is normal and it should disappear when I take it for a decent run and it warms up?

Anyone know if I should be worried about this ?

And what to look out for or listen for etc etc?

I am planning on a run out on Sunday so would like to know if there is a possible fault I may make worse here.

Ta very much

bmwak, my '08 330D whistles too, always has done from when I bought it 12 months ago @ 3000 miles. Hasn't got worse with time, definitely more noticeable between 1000-2000 rpm when the weather is cold and goes away as the engine warms up.

Just treat it as an audible indication that the engine / turbo / oil is not warmed up yet, and not to floor it.

Craig, I don't hear whooshing sounds. If it comes on around 1700 rpm as the turbo spools up then I suppose it could be induction noise. Maybe worth checking around the air filter while someone revs it?
