My mrs has an E46 with this problem, out of warranty I decided to have a go myself, in all it took about 10 mins to unclip the washer bottle rinse out (there was loads of congeled mush at the bottom) and it's working better than ever... I'm not sure how easy they are to ckip out on the E9* though?

Piece of piss on the E46 - I did mine regularly - but on the E9x it's hidden in the wing and is a PITA to remove.

Mine's blocked again....very frustrating. At least I have some time this weekend to sort it out. After cleaning it out last time I bought some Halfords ready mix stuff, 6 quid a bottle and apparently has water softeners in it but it's blocked again. Last time is was slime type stuff, let see what i get this time.

I've never had a gummed up washer bottle in my life. Do these people design them deliberately poorly?

The manuals always say 'only use oils / liquids etc approved by BMW'
This means BMW screen wash, and as its clear, not blue, they can always tell if you've been using the local austrian wine, sorry garage shite. It is a poor design for sure. Can't think of another make of car that has this issue. |

Had the problem too. Out of warranty, so stripped it down myself and cleaned out the tank. No problems since. But I agree, a bit of a PITA to do. Removing the tank isn't too bad, but getting it back in was the killer! Doable though! And definately better than spending £130 to get it done!!!!

This washer tank congealing is a common problem these days - it has to be a reaction with the screenwash itself. Not a problem with just our cars either, many other marques suffer, too.
The ones I have done I've removed the pump and carefully steam cleaned out the tank followed by a gentle flushing with a hosepipe for 15 mins. Clean or replace the filter.

i've started to get this problem now. i can hear the pump working but the stream of water just barely hits the windscreen. do u think it needs a good ol clean or motor on its way out? i have AUC so may ask BMW if they will charge or cover it under warrenty. i used the halfords blue cleaner and its almost on full.

You do not need to take it apart! Just drop a Calgon tablet in for about 30-40 minutes and it should clear.

Drove me nuts for 3 weeks - in the end they'd just left one of the cables into the main control unit, tucked up behind upper dash area, "laying freely" - and it was moving/rattling/banging against the rear side of the main alu trim piece on the dash. Either a couple of tiny cable ties or use of PVC insulation tape would have prevented this in the first place. Could it be similar thing causing the noise on yours?

i got this problem fixed by a dealer who did it FOC whilst looking at another problem i had. worked a gem as it felt like new pumps but was probable a good clean. went on holiday and when i got back after a week i tried the washer but due to the cold weather no water came out, prob frozen, well i have tried today and guess what the jets have gone back to the state they were before, the water bareley touches the windscreen. i have an mot nxt month and i believe they fail if the windscreen washer is not working right??? now as i got this done FOC and the dealer did say its not a warrenty issue, do u think they will fix it again out of good will or make it chargable. in total its only been around 3 wks for the fix and it to start playing up again. i will need to keep a bottle of water in the car for the time being i think to use on the windscreen. also i did try the calgon tablet but that made no difference what so ever.
