I started w/ a porter cable, but now that I have a flex i wish i had started w/ a flex. So i say flex.

As the others mentioned, both the Porter Cable 7424XP and the Flex XC3401VRG are great buffers to start off with. They are paint safe and effective at removing imperfections.
