Removing RainX? Suggestions please!

Not pleased at all with my application of RainX back in September/October, I've given it a while to wear off but I'm still getting frequent juddering wipers, I need to do something about this before it damages the wiper arm. It's definitely not the blades, they were changed less than two months ago.

I need some suggestions to get rid of it. I understand it's silicone based...
Any detergents/polishes/chemicals that might shift it?

Some popular suggestions are:
Acetone (nail polish remover)
White Spirit
Denatured alcohol
Mild abrasive polishes

Can anybody vouch for any of these?

Could the fans of RainX keep their noses out, I don't need a list of people telling me how fantastic they think the bloody thing is - if you think it's so wonderful, tell me how to remove it!

Thanks in advance

I've used RainX on all my cars for years with no problems at all. For me the judder comes from worn wipers or added road grease on the screen. A good clean of wipers and screen and reapplication sorts it out. Benefits of RainX are many. No cons of use for me.

If you need to remove AG Glass polish should clean most off. It will wear off itself in time. Cellulose thinners will do a good job!!

You can get yourself a bottle of Zymol HD cleanse - it'll get off all silicone-based waxes and other products. Will work a treat on the windows.

However, I too am a bit surprised you're getting juddering wipers from the Rain X - are you sure it's not road salt and grease that's contaminated the windscreen along with the application of Rain X? It does need to be applied to an absolutely clean windscreen...

Where did you get your wipers from? My blades have started juddering after a few months!

I'm surprised that its Rain X causing this, I too have used this for at least 6 years, and never had any problems whatsoever.

It does wear of anyway after time, especially with this weather we have been having - so that seems very strange to me you think it is rain x.

Anyway as your 1st post suggests a cheap remover is

Stardrops (Concentrated Cleaner) from asda/sainsbury at about £1.50, its actually very good at removing silicone residue - unless you want to stick to the "brand" expensive car cleaning products of course.

Rain-X always made my wipers shudder too - no matter how clean the windshield was and even with brand new blades. And I understand what the op is going through - that stuff is damn near impossible to remove. I'd recommend trying the alcohol and then perhaps try clay and then finally perhaps a glass polish. GL! I'll never use that stuff again (except for perhaps all the other windows but certainly not on the windshield).

Any glass polish should remove the rain-x. Its only silicon based.

If you want a hydrophobic glass coating that will perform better than the Rain-x in terms of run-off and longevity, check out G1 from http://www.gtechniq.com

There's even a kit with some polish which will remove your rain-x

Me too, just make sure the screen and the blades are cleaned regular. I use Autglym glass cleaner, not the "Fast Glass" though I find the cream better

Because over 50mph you don't need wipers as the water beads off instantly. It also keeps all other glass far cleaner than without treatment. Try this. Treat one side of your car with RainX and one side without. Tenner says in two or three weeks time your treated side will be much, much cleaner, especially with all the shit on our Winter roads. Trust me.

It's just like waxing your paintwork. All treated surfaces repels water and grime easier than on contaminated surfaces. Just like a non stick frying pan. Simples.

I can vouch for Rain X's effectiveness at higher speeds and the safety contribution is great but if Rain X is not responsible for the juddering, are there any possibilities? New blades? (Again?)

They are Bosch something-or-others, fitted by BMW main dealer at the start of November - I'd be surprised if they'd hardened already, they've been put to plenty of use since fitment!

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a shot when my local Asda opens on Saturday.

Sounds interesting, I'll give this a try if all else fails.

Thanks everyone for the assistance, it's greatly appreciated. I'll let you know how it works out.
