When I itemize deductions on my federal return for 2009, can I include my 2009 Massachusetts vehicle excise tax and 2009 Massachusetts registration fees?

I know that if you bought a new vehicle in 2009 (between specific dates) you can write off the sales tax, excise tax, etc. But, that's not for me. I bought in 2008.

Yes you can!. Any state issued tax that occurs on annualized basis and is computed based on the property's value is tax deductible.

That would not include your registration fees, only the excise tax. Typically sales tax is never deductible, only property tax which excise falls under.
