Open Oil Cap?

Today I was driving home and my revs are idle were messed up. went to the gas station and saw that my oil cap was loose and there was oil everywhere. After cleaning it up and put on my oil cap the revs at idle were normal again. My question is what are the long term effects of having my oil cap open while driving.

damn haven't heard my name that many times in a post. rough idle, and everything associated with an engine running without motor oil. wouldn't be pretty. just don't drive with your oil cap open, case closed

fill the oil back up and clean the engine...its going to be a hard to clean it up and it will take a while before all the excess oil will burn out...
