which tyre

I'll need new tyres for my pre-owned 335d. Never mind the recent snow, in sheffield it's slippery, hilly and full of potholes. Not the best place for low profile tyres and hard ride alas. Should have got a disco?
So aren't 'winter tyes' (whatever they are) softer and grippier? (I read a few posts on the topic). Is there a need to change them at all -I don't do high mileage.
I welcome suggestions for 225/40R18 replacement that gives a more comfortable and sure footed ride away from smooth dry roads. Ones that I can actually buy with these rims.
Thanks ....

The winter tyre compounds are softer at lower temperatures, but too soft when the weather warms up (over about 7 degrees C). After this, I believe they would degrade pretty quickly.

Are you running RFT's at the moment?

If you are looking for a balance between regular tyres and winter tyres, perhaps an all-season compound may suit you.

I've currently got winters on an 18'' set which I intend to keep on until the end of Feb, when I'll swap back to my 19'' set with regular tyres. Both sets are made by Vredestein who seem to get pretty decent reviews on both performance and price.

I just put four Falken ZE912s on my 535d and they are significantly better than the OEM RE050 (RFTs) that came off in the current conditions. They are marketed as an all-season tyre.

A quick look on event-tyres shows four 225/40R18 92W FALKEN ZE912 XL at £298.72 fitted (less than £75 a corner). You may find them a little cheaper locally at a Falken dealer (I did). Don't be put off by the price.

Otherwise I'd consider a Michelin PS2 runflat, but you'll be looking at £200 a corner.

335d tyres

Thanks for the tips, I wasn't sure if winter tyres were going to work at all outside 'summer'.

Yes, it came with Bridgestone run flats, there are a coupe of obvious problems with standard tyres.
I tried to find vredestein tyres to fit my 335d (liked this brand for prvious 528i) so looks like an extra set of rims or the Falkens -I'll look for those first now it summer is, well, nearer.

Would be good to get to use all the torque for take off without flashing yellow light or power slide ...
