Can both EGT and AFR probes be installed in Macht Schnell downpipes ?

Hi,

Sorry I don't have experience with this:

I noticed that the Macht Schnell downpipes have one extra bung in each of them for EGT monitoring. I wonder if I can place an EGT probe in one of the downpipes, and an AFR probe in the other ? I noticed the AFR wideband lambda probes are very long, can they be bent once introduced inside the downpipe ?

Thanks !

no reason you couldnt do this, I wouldnt bend the probe, but you could contact the manufacturer for that info.

An EGT probe should be installed in the exhaust manifold as close as possible to the cylinder(s), which is part of the turbos in the N54 case. This means, if the probe breaks the corresponding turbo goes south. AFR probe is fine between turbo and primary catalysts or in a catless DP.

Are you sure the Wideband AFR sensor is long? There are few manufacturers of those and they are pretty typical at about 3/4 inch length. I could see variable lengths on the K type TC's used for EGT.

Sorry, it is the EGT probe which is long
For AFR I think the 1/8" NPT bung is not the correct one, so I can't install the AFR probe there.

I would like to install the EGT probe after the turbo, because it is safer, easier and I only care about temperature deltas.

By the way, would it make sense to install a dual EGT gauge with two probes, one in each downpipe ? Can there be enough temperature variation between the downpipes to justify this ?

I'm not aware of any widebands using a 1/8" NPT fitting.

The bungs are located on both DPs to allows the end user a choice where to mount the thermocouple or have the option to use a dual sweep EGT gauge.

By the way, don't you think it would have been nice from Macht Schnell to put an EGT bung in one downpipe (the one which comes from the hottest bank of cylinders - I think cylinders 4-6) and a common wideband bung (like Bosch LSU 4.2) in the other ? Id would have been very nice Because if I buy ceramic coated downpipes, fitting an wideband bung on the downpipes would ruin the coating...
