Jesus that sounds alot. I had my M3 done in 06 and it cost me 70quid for a full alignment. One of the front wheels was well out too.

£30 wouldn't even cover the time it takes to link your car to the KDS equipment, never mind going about checking all the setup values and making adjustments.
Sounds more like a set of old optical mirrors .... toe in/out but not in relation to the mid-line of your car. No way to check if everything is true - especially when you take the front and rear axles in relation to each other (both can have spot on toe settings but be working like a crab). D.

Sorry I was just talking about wheel alignment in general, not a KDS one!
There's always something else to spend a big wad of cash on. I'l stick to using the "mirrors and bits of string" technique for now! |

got a price of £216 for a kds check at the dealers but found a local place doing hunter wheel alignment for £60 all in. i read somewhere that the kds kit bm use is the hunter machines? any know if this is correct, if not would a hunter alignment be ok? cheers |

Hunter is name of a US company that make various types of wheel alignment equipment.
They also make the KDS set especially for BMW vehicles and to BMW specification. So a KDS set is made specially for BMWs, but that's not to say other Hunter optical aligners are not as good, just not BMW specific. The site below is the UK Hunter site http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/ |

Birds quoted me 223£ plus VAT for KDS alignment, which seems in line with the price mentioned above. Alpina_B3_Lux

I had mine done at a not so local BMW dealer for the princely sum of £134.00 inclusive of VAT - and they picked up and dropped off.
i thought it was rather decent! |

Hi
Followed your link above and found a Hunter alignment garage in my area (Huddersfield). Had a full alignment check yesterday and paid £45. It took just over an hour and I got a print-out - before and after. The garage was c6 people strong and I got talking to the owner. He reckons that the machines are the best on the market and has a contract to align Mercs and Mazda's under warranty. He reckons that he does loads of Mazda's with c1,000 miles on the clock that have been set wrong by the factory. My car is 2 years old and is showing makor wear on the inner edges of the runflats - I have only owned it a month. The BMW dealer where I bought the car says that the tyres are above 3mm tread, so they are OK. The Hunter alignment showed that, of the 12 measurements that are checked, 8 were out of tolerance. One was so far out that it was off the end of the scale and just registered as a X - as opposed to a figure in red. The guys said that this is probably why the tyres are wearing and that the car will drive better. So far, it seems fine to me. On a separate (but similar) issue, I am still unhappy with the whole runflat scenario. I really think that BMW should be giving owners better advice, not leaving things to Moderators on threads such as this. The owner yesterday said that BMW's are set up for runflats - but this is what the people from BMW said to him. A thing that I can't get my head around is, my car is a 320d M Sport on runflats. They have the same runflat tyres on the SE - a much softer ride supposedly. Also, the ES supposedly has normal tyres with runflats as an option, yet the ES is the same suspension set-up as the SE? As I see it, BMW should take the initiative and inform owners of the tyre permutations and what they recommend. They shoud be ahead of the game, not reacting to it. I said to mt local dealer the other day - "what type of runflat are you recommending for a smoother ride?" He just said that they will fit any tyre that I asked for - it's up to me!!! Jeff |
