Petrol engine oil consumption
Hi guys,
I have e90 318i petrol engine for 3 weeks now. I always checked engine level on the board computer, and it was reading max-OK. Car was at main dealer about 6k ago for oil service, and since that time oil was always on max mark. Today i did 200 miles on motorway 70-80mph, come back home and engine level was reading between min and max -OK. I know that oil level is OK, but when i left this morning level was on max mark. How much oil should petrol engine use for 1000km? I could not find anything in owners manual anything about oil consumption. In my vw manual for diesel engine was stated 1litre of oil for 1000km its normal. Thanks |

I have posted this elsewhere (a search might bring it up) but I'm fairly certain it is 1000/1500km per litre which is deemed acceptable by BMW.

Car was serviced at 75k, now 81k, engine oil level shows slightly lower than MAX mark.
So nothing to worry about then |

i got my car about 3-4 weeks ago, absoulutly love it even being 318, still love it, except car has no oil dipstick, just cant get over it I took it today for long run about 200 miles, just motorway driving. Returning 44.7 mpg, driving 70-80mph. |

I have a 318i and had a similar thing happened - showed max when i started off for work, 20mins later when at work, it said oil was low. I think you need to wait for the oil to warm and circulate properly to get an accurate reading. I put 1 litre in, hasn't happened since.

Sounds relatively normal - I'm with most others here - electronic oil level fine but what about keeping a good old fashioned dipstick - that way you can keep an eye on the colour aswell (call me old fashioned but even when it's telling me I've got a long time left til a service I still change the oil if it's looking murky....) Still, modern techonology and all of that

I have done several oil changes my self on the car now and the oil quantity coming out and going back in, by my own measurements, has correllated nicely to what the computer is telling me. I'm not concerned. Yves |

Dont top up with anything less than what the computer says. Topped mine up for the first time saying add 1 litre, poured 1 litre in and oil back to max. It is not a lot of oil considering the sump takes 6.5 litres. At times I have had the odd reading below max and then a higher reading on checking again I think it is just how the car has been driven when checked and awaiting oil to return to sump, but when the car consistently tells you to add oil it is time to top up. |
