Engine Malfunction Light came on this AM

So here we go...... I was on my way in to work this morning and the Engine Malfunction light come on, you now the little engine picture with half shaded out in yellow.. So in the display (NAV screen) it said something like "Engine Malfunction! Reduced power caution". WTF hopefully it's not really anything serious. It's most likely the Turbos.. I did notice when starting this morning it took it a while to start. Longer than normal.. It's only a 2008 with just under 20,000 miles. I hope that they have made a correction to the new Turbos if that is the problem.. Question though, what if it's only one turbo should I have them replace both that is if they will??? Has anyone had similar problems??

Thanks,
Cam

Mostly the HPFP does not die immediately. It's a mid-term process. Take the car to your dealership soon and let them fix (replace) the pump. It's a 400 US$ part plus labor once your warranty expires.

Also ensure or insist that they replace it with the latest version of the HPFP. part ending with 881 was just superseded by a new one, last 3 escape me right now but search the boards for it. It's supposed to be the latest and greatest version.

Is that really the problem? This happened to me today. I drove over a huge pothole and the left front tire hit the bumpstop as I was merging onto the freeway. I floor the car but didn't press the kickdown button and car downshifts into 2nd gear. I let off the gas at around 6K rpm as I reach cruising speed and the enginge malfunction light comes on.

Could my problem be HPFP related as well? I thought it might have something to do with the pothole since the light came on just 5-10 seconds afterwards...

I have an 07 335.

Mine came on this morning as well. But since then it's off...and my car never felt any different..but I didn't try driving it hard either...let us know what happens with your's.

I have two friends her that have had the code but both had different problems. One had a bad cylinder and the other had a bad injector. Yet most on here say it's the HPFP.

Mine did exactly what your car did this morning, went into limp mode. Longer start this morning, jerking, nearly stalled twice, rough idle. I have an 07 335 with 50k miles. I believe the letter that BMW sent me states that HPFP are covered for 10 years or 100k miles. Anybody else get that letter some time back??

I took mine in this morning and they hooked it up and came back and said it was a misfire or something. I live in the middle of nowhere Germany so the English is limited. He couldn't really explain it but he said it was no big deal and to come back if it came on again. But my car never ran any different that I could tell and it hasn't come back on again since the ride to work...so I don't know....

First thing to do is turn the engine off and back on. Then drive normally for a day or two. Hammer it on occasion. If the light does not come back, it was probably a single cyl missfire (happened to me on a 200 mile 65mph steady road trip).

If all else fails get a BT cable so you can read the codes yourself.

Well you guys hit it on the head…. It was the HPFP… I called them this morning to see what the problem was since I haven’t heard anything from them since last Thursday after dropping off the car. I asked him (when i dropped her off) that if it was the HPFP that I would love to have the latest and greatest HPFP (Continual) but he told me that it would be up to BMW New Jersey, they would have to make that call. So we’ll see when I pick her up tonight.. Most likely not. Thanks again guys....

I restarted my car a few minutes ago. It started right up but then began idling rough, then the tach went from 1000 to 2000, back and forth, CEL came back on again, and strong fuel odor present, so I shut it off. Confirmed HPFP?

There generally are various symptoms. Its really hard to say conclusively. Sometimes the CEL does not even light. Long cranks are the most common one. I have not heard of a fuel odor has being one of them. I would just suggest you make your next stop your local dealership.
