Ford owned Jaguar since 1989 but was running it as a largely independent subsidiary (kind of like what Fiat does with Ferrari) up until mid/late 90s. The 1st gen XK8, introduced in 1996, was the last "true" Jaguar. The S-type, which came out in 1999, was based on the Lincoln LS platform and had a V6 engine from the Taurus. The same year, Jaguar was made part of Ford's "Premier Automotive Group". Then came the infamous X-type, which was essentially an uglier version of the FWD Ford Mondeo at 1.5 times the cost.

When I'm talking distinct older jags, I'm referring to pre-1999 cars. And FYI, all of the cars that Jag sells today were designed in the Ford days.

According to that chart, they are no where near tops in quality. Chevy, Ford, Honda, Benz, Jeep, GMC, BMW, Porsche, Volvo, Audi, Acura, Hyundai, etc etc - essentially every other major automaker - exceeds Jag's quality in JD Power's tests.

Don't let clever marketing fool you.

They are real smart.

The new XF's are nice, but pricey to buy and, I guess, to maintain. If I were to consider Jaguar, I would just skip ahead and lease an Aston Martin instead only because of how beautiful they are.

Maybe OT, but how does Cadillac get 3/5 ("about average") rating on every mechanical category, but rate 5/5 ("among the best") in overall quality?

That line alone makes the rest of it appear suspect by association, IMO....

The XF is very nice, and the quality hiccups and technology glitches that have affected the model is very common. It's a brand new car. The same happens to every automaker, especially premium automakers as they often put untested/experimental technology in their vehicles.

Price-wise, I think it compares favorably with the Germans, as it has a standard V8. If I was looking for a premium mid-size sedan, I'd look for a S/C 4.2 XF, slightly used.

When you compare standard equipment like for like the XF will probably work out to be the cheapest compared to the equivalent German model, well that is the case in the UK anyway.

Regarding the reliability of the cars, sorry guys but it's not only in the US but the UK as well where the Jaguar as a brand as been rated very highly. I would say at the very least it's on par with what BMW have to offer so that means extremely good.

If you liked the xf, drive the xf-r. Its an xf on steriods.

Ive had mine for 3 or so months and love it , not a single
issue yet.
