If it were me I would be pushing for a new engine, if they have found alot of metallic debris in the sump then it has been all around the engine and will have been causing wear and may possibly have also caused blockages which will have a detrimental effect downstream. Tell them that you want a new engine and see if they give in.

I have just emailed the service manager and asked for a full explanation of what has happened I have also outlined my concerns over future engine wear / problems and asked for his comments. Will see what he say. This was my first BMW (previously had Audi's) so would now be very doubtful about buying another (I have also had the central locking replaced under warranty and various ongoing rattle issues.

+1. You have been unlucky enough to have total engine failure. A new engine would be the best solution.

Will wait to see what the service manager says and then I will raise the question of a new engine. Think somehow the chances a slim - who would make the call - dealer or warranty company?

I have to say I am astounded that this could have happened on a car with 30000 miles. Im just concerned that I could be left with a lemon! If a substantial portion on the engine has suffered damage, should I be pushing for a replacement of the whole unit? I have been told it could take 6 or more days to sort this mess out!!
All the above is resulting damage but what caused it, oil starvation ? I would be pushing for new engine and nothing less. If you accept the rebuild you will be just waiting for the next problem.

Have batted off another email requesting that the entire unit be replaced given that the car is less than 2 years old and given that this is effectively an engine failure. I will wait to see what the dealer says. (Plus I am told that a number of parts are on back order, so who knows how long I will have to wait?)

Hi Burt,

I would defo push for a new engine especially as it has done only 32k. This is nothing for a modern engine.

If the crank shaft has failed all the bits of swarf would have gone round the engine several times wrecking all the bearings etc. Not to mention possibly damaging the block.
The only way to sort this would be a complete strip, wash and blow out of all the oil ways followed by a complete rebuild and replacement of all the moving parts.
Basically a new engine.

I would accept nothing less

If the above isn't done then your current engine won't last long. Premature wear and possible seizure as the bearings 'pick-up' on the scoring created by the swarf.

Surely a new engine would be covered under warranty?

Spoke with Service Manager and basically a new engine is not an option under warranty as there is not enough damage to warrant a replacement (He said the warranty was very strict on what warranted an complete engine replacement). He assured me however that the damage was localised to the con rod 3 bearing on the crankshaft and that there was only a small amount of filings in the sump. They are replacing con rod 3, con rod bearing, crank shaft and the oil pump, but as yet do not know what has caused the bearing to fail. He assured me that the engine would be fully flushed out and should there be any issue which could be loosely connected with this outside of warranty, they would be looking to BMW to stand over it.

What do you guys think? - Dont think I can get any further with this.

Providing you get something in writing to this effect then you are probably covered. Make sure you do get in writing though just in case, plus the word "Looking For" would not be concrete enough for me.

Keep at them, grind them down!!!
