BEWARE: new money scam!

Quote:
BEWARE: new money scam!
I just got screwed over by a new money scam. Buyer agree to buy your item and send over an overfunded fake cashier check. Then buyer apologized for the mistake and ask for the difference back by Western Union. Few days later, cashier check bounced and you are basically screwed.
Usually the overfunded amount are quite substantial compare to the price of the item.

Buyer offers a little incentive for the trouble. "Please keep $50 for the inconveniences and send the rest to...."

You are WARNED. Don't let it happen to you
this guy from vwvortex forums got scammed!!

There really aren't any new scams, just new victims.

Nobody is immune to being scammed, but you can cut down your risk by remembering the two simple rules: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is; and if it looks like you're going to get something for nothing, it's probably actually the other way around.

+1. This one is the oldest one in the book. From craigslist:

# DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.
# NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
# FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

I use bank to bank wire transfers to do all my international transactions.
Direct cash into your account, so, there's nothing to worry about.

However, the seller has to trust you though.

i got one for an ebay auction... checked looked real good... commerce bank n.c. Too bad he wasn't smart enough to use Commerce bank NA.
I even had an email on some similar scam, so i gave him an address to send the check. Gave him the FBI headquarters in LA.
Then 2 weeks later, i emailed him again saying this is a sting operation and i'm on to him. Never heard from him again.

For what reason should the seller/buyer trust another buyer/seller over the internet? Trust should not be magically formed out of desperation of selling or buying an item...but it does...and that's why people get scammed.
