Two quick maintenance/service questions...

I just brought my car in for it's last free maintenance/warranty appt.

Two things I wanted them to do was...

1. Update the progman software to the latest
2. Change oil/filter

The SA said that my last oil change was 3/2009 and the earliest I could get it would be 3/2010. He said I had to wait. I told him I would hit 50k before then, he basically said too bad.

Then I asked about the progman update and he said BMW would not update it unless it was needed because of an issue. Is that true?

Thanks!

How many miles left does the CBS say you have for your oil change? They're supposed to change it before 3/10 as long as it's been ~15,000 miles since the last change (and the car says it's due).

Yes, it's true that they will not update the car's software unless there is a problem that warrants it.

They're right on both accounts. Oil changes are 1 yr or when the CBS states it's in need of a change whichever is less.

As for the software update, Cars are not like computers, you're not going to get any benefit from a software update unless your car exhibits a problem. The updates take a couple of hours to do complete, and there's always a chance that it won't take the first time which means another day at the dealership.

how many MILES until next service?

i'll try them to do it on 1st of march so they have no excuse, til then try not to go over 50k. as far as computer update goes, you can try to BS them that the car feels slugish and laggy, rattles so on and on. it worked on my friend's car who also just purchased the car few weeks back and had the programmed updated recently... you can try another dealer in your area also...

sounds like there is nothing you can do about the oil change. but think of some bug with your sound system or navi if you have it for the progman.
