X5 4.0d Twin Turbo
The facelift version of the X5 will release soon with the twin turbo version of the 330d LCI motor. This new common rail diesel should be quieter, more economical and higher revving than the current 35d. 306bhp, 600 nm at 1500, it is a full second faster than the 245hp 3.0d X5, so should be good for sub-fives in the 3 series!! Hmmmm
Anyone heard when this new 306 bhp unit will make it into the E9x line-up? |

Hope they dont call it a 340d, that sound cack.
They should keep the name 335d. 306HP is not enough for sub 5 sec to 60mph. Has the new X5 been out that long already that its LCi time already?!

No, Its just so far away from what the model actually is.
it it was a 4.0 denzil then fair enough. You can get away with 35d, as its twin turbo (Up from single turbo 30d). But 40d? what does that number represent!?

Don't believe there are any plans for the 40d to be available in the 3 series as is, although it could appear as a detuned version and still be 35d, due to improved economy, emissions, etc... Can't see it happening until the current 3 is replaced; it's just had its makeover!

If it takes 340+ in current in E9x then 306 will
never be enough not matter what torque

Besides torque is directly relational to HP. The only thing you can decide is where the power is delivered
![]() Obviously thats looking at things very simplistically...

Some very simplistic maths
If you take the X5 numbers vs what we know about the same engines in the the 3 series (I said this was simplistic!) then:
The 245hp 540 nm single turbo X5 does 0-60 in 7.6 seconds In the 3 series the same motor does it in 6.1 seconds, so a 1.5 second difference due to lighter weight, less wind resistance, less drive train losses and efficient dynamic measures like intelligent alternator, electric power steering etc According to BMW the X5 with the new 306hp 600nm motor does the 0-60 sprint in 6.6 seconds. Vs. the current 35d motor, there's extra hp, extra torque at lower revs, higher revs (that can be a biggie in sprint times, depending on shift points), a few kilos less weight and far less resistance on the motor with alernator and power steering removed during acceleration. A simple comparison would indicate that 5.1 seconds is certainly on the cards (6.6 - 1.5) It must be getting close to the point when LSD becomes a necessity, or at least a highly desirable option for that kind of power and torque. Personally I would consider a BMW with 5.1 seconds (or thereabouts) 0-60, 40 mpg, LSD AND MT(!) very seriously indeed. So come on BMW! |
