320d SE E90 163 or 177bhp ??????

How can I tell if my model is 163 or 177bhp.

I have only just bought it and the previous owner advertised it as 177 (although I bought it thinking he had made a mistake).

It was registered in July 2005, so Im thinking earlier models must have been the lower bhp models.

July 2005 will be 163 at best. I had an 06 320d and that was 163, can't remember when it went from 150 to 163. If it was advertised as 177 you've got a case against the seller.

177 was out not longer after mine, so late 07 plates and 57 plates.

163 has a downturned exhaust, 177 has a DPF so it has a straight exit exhaust.

I am happy enough with the performance, and did some checks of the bhp before I bought it, but I thought the E90 was only 163 or 177 (I hope its not 150).

I did question the seller about his advert stating 177, but he acted dumb, but I bought it in my own mind thinking it was 163, if it turns out to be 177 all well and good.

I just wondered if there was anyway of telling the difference by looking at the engine or something.

Cafe.Racer, thanks, mine has down turn exhaust, and is 2005. So that answers that.

You should have an owners manual which will give you the specs but it is a 163 from what you describe.

I am an engineer and a man....you dont expect me to have read the manual do you??? :-)

But you are correct, just looked up the specs in the book and again confirms 163. Thanks.

Well it's better to confuse yourself with your remap potential rather than what HP your car came as stock

DMS or Evolve I'd suggest...

Up in Scotland with a 163 I'd say take a punt with angel tuning. They are local and the scottish outfit (unlike the midlands one) is very well respected.

What base car you have ends up having an affect on what you get from a remap

MEGA, thanks for that, they were my first choice as two friends had recommended them, and price wise they were very competative and convenient considering my location.

I am certainly impressed with the standard performance having come from a 103bhp VW passat (although currently got a Passat hire car for a week, and this is a different machine, think it might be the 140 or170bhp model) and before that a 140bhp Mondeo.

But to think I can go up to nearly 200bhp with a remap will seem staggering.

I want to try and hold of for maybe a month or so and get use to the car in standard trim and get a good few tanks of Diesel used to get a good mpg figure, to then see the comparison.
