I think that it depends. I am sure the M3 would be overall better in the end. But right now I would not buy an M3 even if I had the money (which I don't). This is mostly because of the lacking low-end torque and fuel economy. But another factor is taxes and insurance...which are much higher for the M3.

E92 remapped 335i v E92 M3
my car got a increase in from 301BHP to 363BHP and 440lbs/ft of tq, I run Shell Vmax/optimax 97 octane. I have an Auto Paddleshift box and with no mods i could destroy E46 m3's, with the remap and nothing else i can take an E92 m3 consistantly and with not too much effort. I live in the Uk so the octane rating version of petrol is different to you guys.
Just thought I'd share as I'm not too keen on a Piggy back ecu. It's a very capable car and can easily out do an E92 M3. Also Hamman motor sport derestrict the car as part of their remap program and offer a top speed of 186mph. For the record though my next will be a new M5 (E60>) or current M6, I love how the E92 M3 looks , and still would buy one IF i never owned a 335i. Peace out..

It is a good deal... 335i plus $500 chip beats current gen M3 in a straight line. The suspension, great brakes, interior treatments, heritage, etc, all add to the price of the M3. I think BMW did make the two models a little bit too close together. When the M3 is TT inline 6, I will be more interested in that. Turbos are just more fun for me than a regular V8! Maybe I'm crazy.

Agreed. BMW 3-Series cars (including the M3) aren’t meant to be straight-line dragsters. They’re designed to be a near-perfect balance of handling, performance, and every day practicality. Competent dragsters are a dime a dozen. Do a search on YouTube to see how many blown, FWD Civics there are running under 11-second quarter mile times for much less $$$ than our cars.
Also, just about any production vehicle can be equipped with a powerful engine to go fast on a drag strip (the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning and Dodge Ram SRT10 pickup trucks immediately come to mind). Simply put, straight line speed is overrated. It’s speed through the turns that separates real performance cars from the wannabes… This is where the BMW 3-Series (with ZSP) excels, and the M3 excels even more.

A good tuned 335i is faster than a stock M3. However, supercharged M3's with 600bhp are around as well. Or stroker kits ( 4.6, 520bhp ). The M3 is a very nice car, even stock.

If you have $25k laying around, sure. Mods costs exponentially more for the M3 and frankly, we're seeing 500-550rwhp on 335's with tune, full bolt ons, high octance plus meth for less. That being said, S/C M3's are pretty bad ass.

At the last CCA autocross event, I beat a few M3s, and the fastest street car was a 335i. And there were plenty of V8 M3s entered in the event. A 335i can handle decent enough, where the final outcome will depend on the driver.

There are no 335i's anywhere near that kind of power unless they have nitrous or new turbos..

I will bet some 335i BMWs are getting close to 500 Horsepower at the crank though.
