All i know is that the N55 has one turbo and I can tell you, you will be able to upgrade that one turbo and make much more power than with the N54 Turbos. With a nice properly sized twin scroll you can make some good power I would assume well into the 400's.

From a cost standpoint it is much more expensive to take a N54 that has twin turbos and R&D a single turbo kit, than the N55 which already has a single turbo and manifold. A large single turbo will make more power than the current upgraded twins that are available for the N54. It will be much easier to implement a larger single turbo in a car that already has a single turbo.

The fact there still isn't a solid kit out there this far into the N54 life.

People hate but some of them will be driving a N55 in the future. Then all of sudden, it will be the greatest thing since sliced bread. |

Regardless of single or twin turbo, you still have to design a manifold to accommodate aftermarket flange. You still have to make dp, dump tube, and make clearance for larger charge pipes and wastegate. Given both engines designs are similar in terms of physical architecture, in the end, you will have invested SAME amount of R&D for both engine designs. You're saying making a single turbo kit is harder for supra than evo which isn't true.

It's not the hardware design that's holding the development of the kit. Any local shop with an ability to make manifold and charge pipes will be able to make a pseudo-single turbo kit for n54. N55 will just be the same until the inherent challenge is overcome.

The thing that has put off a lot of the "tuner" crowd (good portion of this board) is the presence of valvetronic on the N55. Let's be clear, valvetronic is some amazing hardware and it's largely responsible for the improved low end on the N55 as well as the improved fuel economy but it has a reputation of being un-tunable.
I really hope that's not the case on the N55. Time will tell.

Hey guys IIRC the manifold, patented BMW design, contributes significantly to the performance of the engine. So I would be really surprised if an aftermarket company could design a new manifold w/larger turbo that produces the same driving characteristics as the stock engine AND doesn't cost $5,000.

S54s (as in the E46 M3 motor) don't have Valvetronic.

Lots of "will be"s and "won't be"s floating around on this subject...
Might I ask : Where does everyone get their inside info? AFAIK no one here drives an N55, or tunes an N55. -scheherazade |
