The Dinan tune does much more than just jack up boost. Full access to the ECU has given engineers at Dinan the ability to improve many other engine control functions without having to override or trick the engine's safety parameters. For example, it drives the water propeller faster to create better cooling in the engine, since increasing boost adds to the heat problems from which these cars already suffer.
But it does come down to warranty. Since Dinan are prepared to guarantee that their products won't damage your engine, they take a more conservative and responsible approach to engine tuning. Remove that, and what the heck, might as well crank up boost to the max to the delight of the kiddies who mostly turn in their rentals after three years of abuse. Then it becomes someone else’s problem.
If you are outside the warranty period, I’d also give a company like GIAC a look since they have embarked upon the exercise in a comprehensive way, have a place of business other than their garage, and actually have engineers on their payroll. Dinan have a more extensive dealer network though and you’ll find them right in BMW dealerships.
