Replica Shark Fin - correct colour?

Hi there,

We are looking at getting a replica Shark Fin for the roof of our soon-to-arrive 320d Coupe as we believe without the M-Sport kit or spoiler the car looks a bit 'flat' and we reckon the fin would break up the lines a bit better.

We have seen them on eBay, like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/REPLICA-SHARK-...item3a565c28f7

It says it is 'supplied in silver' but I am not sure if this will be the right shade of silver. We are getting TiAg titanium silver. Will this be ready to stick on the roof or would a respray be required.... has anybody any experience of this?

Many thanks in advance

Chris

Welcome to the forums Cy. If you check the UK regional forum you might find some more specific advice there as there have been a few recent threads on shark fins and who sells what and if it is realistic.

Best bet would be get the color code from the supplier and then match it to yours. Titanium Silver should be 354.

We get our shark fins painted with OEM supplied paint to make sure you get 100% paint match.

Hi everyone,

We finally took delivery of our 320d this week - it's brilliant - and the TiAg painted shark fin and 'lip' spoiler arrived too.

Before attached the fin, I am curious as to how strong the 3M tape is. There is a line of tape around the edge of the fin - will this be strong enough to hold it?

One part of the tape has peeled back and so is no longer sticky.
Do you think the safest thing to do would be to buy some more 3M tape and give it some extra strength? Will we be able to remove this without damaging the paintwork?

All help appreciated!!

Thanks

The 3M double sided tape is notoriously strong, especially when sticking onto paint. don't worry i'm sure you will be fine either way

I think that should be fine. I trust 3M double sided tape to hold up my front EuroPlate.

What you could do to that part where the paper unstuck is dab a little bit of rubbing alcohol so that it gets sticky again.

Gosh thanks for the super-fast replies - very much appreciated. Looking forward to adding these to the car, cheap and cheerful but I reckon it will at a subtle bit of style.

Nr!gue - don't mean to sound daft but what do you mean by 'rubbing alcohol'?

Been for my first motorway sprint in the 320d this evening, so impressed. The engine is very strong and pulls away incredibly well. Compared to our V70 T5 (0-60 in 6.4s) it feels equally fast. And all the same time returns 59mpg!!

Pleased to have found a knowledgable bunch on the forum too

P.S. Any tips on making sure we get it perfectly lined up and positioned on the roof...?

I had to look it up.

In the US we refer to isopropyl alcohol or medical alcohol used to disinfect cuts as 'rubbing alcohol'

P.S. I'd be a good idea to wipe the area with alcohol before sticking on the fin.
As for measuring, you could ask someone for the position of the fin relative to where the rear window's edge is. then all you'd need to do is center it from there.

P.P.S. If it helps you at all, I just went out to see the distance from the rear edge of the roof to the rear edge of the sharkfin and its 2.5 Inches (63.5mm)

That's a huge help, thanks!

Once we get some daylight I'll measure it up and have a look for some rubbing alcohol..

3M Tough enough to do the Job?

Hi

I'm new on here (in the last hour), and I'm fitting a boot spoiler and a Sharks fin.

Both come with 3M tape and I was wondering if this really is strong enough through washing, motorway driving etc to hold them in place?

Any horror stories welcome to save me losing them in the car wash!!!!!

3M tape should be good to hold that down.

We've had ours on for about a month now (even with little gaps in the sealant of the tape - see other thread) and after a few minutes of holding it in place when fitting it is stuck for good.

We've been up and down the motorway in it - haven't tried it in a car wash (don't go near the things!) and through the rain and ice with no issues.
