Time for semi-annual detail

Spring is right around the corner and I need to get a jump on the semi-annual detail of my JB 335d. Hopefully I'll beat the pine pollen this year. I normally due a wash with Dawn to get off all the grease/tar but this year I'm thinking of using ONR or using ONR with a carwash soap.

My question with ONR is it imperative that you individually dry each panel or can you wait until the entire car has been washed?

ONR with a car wash soap???

Yes, you need to dry the ONR after every panel. If you let it dry, it will not wipe off and you will be left with blue water spots. They are easily removed with a quick wipe of onr solution again, but just save yourself the headache. Might as well throw a coat of wax on once a month as well. Here is a write up by DJ that I used to use from time to time. I might try out the OCW again this summer. Its just so hard to give up the ease of use and better protection from blackfire, but the OCW would just be a booster!!

My thinking was that I clay the car after wash so I was thinking what's the point in drying off the car if I'm going to go over it with clay only to rinse it a 2nd time.

Just get a $1.20 bottle of Dawn. I've had my bottle forever. By the time you wash with Dawn, clay the car and do a wipe down, the paint will be ready. I really appreciate these auto washing specialty companies, and I order things from them all the time, but sometimes they sell stuff that is just ridiculous or substantially more money than an identical product you can buy a Target or Walmart.

once in a while, to strip the wax and remove oils on the paint, Dawn is ok. to use it all the time every wash, every week, that is not good as its a very drying product. It will dry out your trim pieces and paint rather quickly

My normal routine has always been to use Dawn when I detail 2x/yr, but since I have a JB car, I was thinking ONR added to the soap may give me some additional protection against marring.

Oh come on guys, I didn't mean use Dawn for every wash, it will strip the wax off the car!!!!!!!!! I meant there is no reason to spend $$ on "paint prep," "wax stripping" or products like that for your quarterly detail, just use Dawn.

I doubt it, Dawn is a good enough surfactant that you shouldn't mar the paint at least beyond what you are waxing for anyways. I'd just use Dawn and clean lightly, even if you have to wash twice. Some marring is just inevitable. Plus, once you strip off the residual of an old wax/sealant coat, you are going to notice significantly more blemishes in the paint as the wax/sealant product is no longer hiding them.

Finished last night, and my hands are sore. ONR worked great, but I followed up with a Dawn wash to stip any remaining AIO/SG. Now I don't know if it was the low humidity or what, but the AIO was absolutely great at removing minor water spotting. 3 coats of SG later and she's good to do for another 6 months. Now I'm ready to take on whatever the environment can dish out!

PS. I was amazed how much dirty my MF mitt picked up when using the ONR. I used the same mitt for the Dawn wash and the dawn caused the mitt to release the dirt almost instantly (slight panic moment after I washed the roof of my car!). I was thinking, "Oh crap did it just drop out on the roof of my car?"

Socom - as you discovered, you should not use the same mitt for ONR and soap washes. As you discovered, ONR makes the wash medium hold in the dirt. As soon as you mix some soap in with it, it releases the dirt, and there can be a lot of it!

I prefer a grout sponge with ONR, then wash the sponge in the sink afterward.

FWIW, my detail regime is:

- Wash (and dry)
- Clay (a more concentrated ONR is my clay lube)
- IPA wipedown
- polish
- IPA wipedown
- seal
