Service Estimate for Oil Change and 18pt Inspection

Hi-

Dealer's quoting me $250 for changing oil, microair and air (wouldn't need one cause I have a air intake) filters for my 2006 325i with approx. 26K miles on it. (I only drive it during the spring/summer.)

$250? Really? Been a while since I've been to the dealer (I've changed oil on it myself, thanks to the DIY on e90 Post ) but figured I it's time, probably need to update software, and get this 18 point inspection.

Is this quote in the ballpark guys?

Is your car still under warranty? If so, spend that $250 at the best independent BMW shop in the area for a end-of-warranty inspection.

Damn, I like those wheels..

If you're looking to save money on the oil change, buy your own oil and filter and take it to an independent shop that will just charge the labor and disposal. I pay $26 to have a shop do it.

Based on what people say on this forum, the dealers charge about $100 for an oil change. The cabin filter is about $30 and takes about 10 minutes to install. The air filter is a bit more time consuming but a tech should be able to install it in under 1/2 hour. The book rate the dealer charges for the two air filters is probably at least an hour and the parts are around $50, so $250 for the oil change and filter changes seems in line with dealer rates. I'd bet a independent BMW mechanic would be a $100 less.

Thanks all.
Looking for an independent, reputable shop.
Would an indie shop be able to update PROGMAN or is this a dealer exclusive?

Regardless, thanks again.

From what I have read, the dealers don't and won't update your car's software, unless there is a reason to (i.e. specific problem you are having them fix). There really wouldn't be any benefit of an update if you weren't experiencing a problem anyway - and there is always a risk of the new software not taking to your car correctly anytime the dealer tries to update. It's my guess that this is why they don't update just to update.

Not sure if indy shops can update.
