Took my shit heap to the dealer today and asked them to check out my rear brakes - rear left was creaking/squeaking when pulling off on an incline.
i tried to replicate the sound on the forecourt whilst the service advisor was with me but surprise surprise it was having none of it.... anway got a call a few hours later and they said the car was fine but still felt like taking it for a ragging. oh also forgot i dont even think they bothered looking at it because they hadnt taken the wheel off by the looks of it (car and wheels were covered in mud b4)

so question is, wats sensible mileage for their 'test run'?

Circa 40miles is common...depends if the dealership is somewhere in the sticks. Though it has often known to be more.

Never had anywhere near 40miles, thats at least 45-50 mins. I doubt they want technicians spending nearly an hour on test drives.

Worst Ive had was at an Indi, 7 miles I wasnt happy about.

For sure, if they need to drive some distance on rare occasions for some issue they will.

They might need at least 10mls to find a suitable road to really rag the arse off it though!

I also make it very clear if they break it, they replace it!

Whenever my car goes in, I demand it is worked on my someone with experience.

I'm with Anneka on this one, experience over youth as far as the car is concerned.

If you trust the dealer to do work on your car it does not matter if they do 40 miles if they fix the problem.

Creep

What happened to Anneka's post, do they self destruct after a certain time period!

This is the key point though, how do you know they take care of your motor when they drive it?

Do they let it warm through before thrashing the tits off it? Or do they just take a view that it's not their car and rag the arse of it with little/no mechanical sympathy.

Well one is so paranoid, that one does accompany the workshop controller on diagnostic drives

However thats probably just a waste. How many 335d's, M3's, X5's etc do these people drive daily? Lots probably. I have been through so many cars, that I have honestly stopped feeling anxious regarding this, as there is absolutely no mileage in it. Regardless of however many precautions we take, its fate if something's going to go wrong, its going to go wrong:

Once upon a time we used to own a VW Polo GTI 1.8T, I took this for a while I waited service. By the time the car was bought out it looked as though it had been keyed! Don't know how it happened, but probably I had pissed someone off when I complained to VW about an earlier incident at the dealer. That particular UK dealership was ranked in the top 10 dealerships in Europe.

not so much the dealers I worry about but the car valeters. NCP in Manchester is unreal, several scallys let loose on some seriously expensive motors.

I was such a cynic, whenever my car was away from me, I used to have trouble sleeping at night.

Forget the dealership technician, its the Mrs we need to be aware of or if applicable the Mr

Pjs, don't get me started...

Even the valet at the Dorchester doesn't get to park my car , because clearly my car is better than the other exotica they handle such as Maserati MC12, Enzo etc (feel silly sometimes).

Now then, valeters in car parks, why do they have to splash water all over the other cars?

Exactly my point Gibbo (please ignore the last two lines there... not anything I intended to post and the reason I deleted )...

In my experience things have always gone really well, but I would (personally) rather have a few extra miles on the clock of a car that runs like a dream. I am certain that with all the work that a technician has to do every day he wouldn't have the time for unnecassary road trips even if he did quite fancy one.

I was thinking too that the last two lines were very un-Anneka.
