I use Castrol edge 10/50 from memory. Have also used mobile 1.

Ideally you want an oil with 5W30 viscosity and BMW "LLO1" rating. 6 months ago, the only oil I could find to meet this spec was "Castrol SLX professional Longtec". I bought it from the BMW dealer at great expense because my car was still very new and I didn't want to take any chances with the wrong oil.

There is Castrol edge sport 5W30 available from supercheap Auto, but the oil has lower grade LL98. It might be suitable if you change the oil more often than recommended.

If the car has already done some kilometres, I think it is probably reasonable to go to a 40W rated oil. Eg: Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W40, Shell Helix Ultra 5W40. Both of these have the correct LL01 rating.

I know some on the forum use the Castrol Edge sport 0W40 with BMW LLO4 rating.

I use Castrol Edge sport 0W40. The ratings don't mean much - the reason it doesn't have LL01 rating is because it's all about money and marketting and costs millions to implement. LL01 means it meets 2001 standards whereas LL04 meets 2004 standards.
