Advice really appreciated

Hi everyone.

Im looking for a bit of help from all the knowlegable people on here. Im looking at buying an E92 325i. Its a 2006 model so a 2.5 litre engine and has an auto box.

Just wondering whats the auto box like in this car ? Its done 67000 miles so should I worry about this or are there any engine or gearbox issues to be aware of with this mileage?

Its a private sale so apart from the usual things like a full service history and looking at panels and bodywork for damage or crash repair is there anything else I should be wary of or looking for ?

Suggestions and advice really apprecated.
Cheers,
Stephen.

Erm...I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but the 325i is a 3 litre engine not a 2.5

I have a 335d and I think the auto-box is very good. It's very "managable". I'm not sure if the box in the 325i is the same though.

Best advice I can give is to get out and test drive a car with the engine/gearbox combo you're considering.

They made the 3l one after 2007. Looking at the figures there doesn't seem to be that much difference tbh, noticeable difference anyway, except some mpg improvement.

Look for chips on the front of the car near the bonnet. 325i is a good reliable lil motor mate. All rounder.

Mine's a manual so can't help with auto issue.

It is well suited to the 335d engine though. The torque helps also.

I think for a 325i a manual would be better.

Thanks for the replies. Its great to be able to get advice from so many people with actual experience of these cars instead of someone whos just going to tell you what you want to hear to sell the car.

I do intend to test drive the car but I was just wodering is that because this is one of the early e92 models is there any issues with the auto box or should it still be ok at 67000 miles ?

Thanks again,

Stephen.

The engine itself is (from what I've heard and researched and experienced to an extent) very, very reliable if kept in good nick. I haven't heard of any gearbox issues with the 325i tbh at all so I think you're safe regarding that. I do agree however that the auto may not suit a 325i as much as it would probably suit a higher end car. May be a bit of a waste but I can't really comment as I've never driven an auto BMW.

Look at the car, get a real feel for it during the test drive and decide whether you like it or not. Then pull the trigger.

Good luck

My friend has basically the same car E92 325i auto

He's had no issues but the car only has 50k

It's a bit of a lazy drive with the auto box as it has'nt got the punch of the diesels but it all depends what you were driving before. It's by no means slow.

I agree with your comments, the torque of the bigger diesels really suit the 6-speed auto, the smaller we get with petrol, the box gets a bit, as you say, lazy. But many find it still does a good job.

Test drive as long as you can, to get a good feel for what it can do as an auto. The 2.5 petrol does work well with a manual box. Feels nice and sporty for a mid size motor.

Not heard of any serious issues with the 6-speed auto, once the software issues were sorted in the 5-series.

I'm very happy with my auto 330i - the 'box can feel lazy at times but completely changes character in sport or manual mode - you almost get two cars in one. my only minor gripe is that nipping out at junctions and roundabouts the box sometimes takes a moment to change down, but if you're aware of this you can compensate.

Had a 325i Auto for 2 years and now a 335d auto. The torque in the petrol 325i is not great and as others say is a bit lazy and overtaking needs you to knock down a few gears. However, put it in manual sport mode and let it rev out further than it does in auto mode and it really is quite quick. Really lovely silky smooth engine, so quiet.

As regards reliability of the box i can't see any issues as have seen plenty of auto BMW with well over 100k on the clock so wouldn't worry in that respect.
