www.BIMRS.org <-- for the work.

You have a 325 so I'm not sure if you have a ZF or the GM/Opel unit. You might want to call the dealership. If you have a the ZF then you're probably looking at Shell M-1375.4 (sold as ZF Lifeguard 6 & MERCON SP).

Land Rover, Jaguar, Hyuundai, BMW, Marerati, Audi all have this fluid as well.

Good luck and I want to just warn you to not be surprised if you A/T starts to develop problems 10-20k miles after the change.

in your opinion what would then be the cause of the failure?

Well, currently the friction material worn off the clutch packs is floating around in the ATF. This material is still helping everything go. The new ATF will not contain this material so I expect it to start slipping. I think, other than the dealership, based on the mileage he may have difficulty finding someone to do the ATF change.

I have heard this theory before, and I don't believe it. However, thats just my opinion, so i don't think its worth debating. One last question: do you think that if he had changed his ATF much earlier, say at 60K miles, he would be at risk for this clutch material induced failure?

This was told to me when I was younger and also by Pentosin who supposedly has a close relationship with the BMW technicians who belong to BIMRS.org

As for having changed earlier? Sure. I would've done a change prior to 50k miles. What people don't realize is that cars sold in the use are by law required to last 10yrs/120k miles. This just happens to to when the first ATF fluid change occurs, and why BMW will sometimes do a good will replacement of an AT which dies prior to 100k miles.

Sir, PLEASE change it! You can get 7 liters out of your transmission at a local euro tuner shop. Also you need to change your pan, too, because the filter is attached to the filter.

Just change it. I did mine at 50k and alot of independant bmw shops recomend it at 80k. Look at your owners manual it states change the trany fluid it 100k miles! I would change the pan out as well because the 325i has the ZF trany with the integrated filter. Im planning on changing it 100k along with my trany fluid again.

My dealer here in the UK says the auto-box on my 330 (Diesel) is filled-for-life and doesn't require a change!

ZF, the manufacturer of the units, themselves stated that the fluid should be changed every 100,000km or 60,000 miles. See post #60: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=345598&page=3

I would do it a bit earlier than that, at 50,000miles just to be on the safe side. Another alternative for fluid to use is from Land Rover LRN13754. This is the shell M-1375.4 stuff. My local dealer charges $17/liter which is the cheapest source I've found for shell M-13754. I've already bought 7 bottles, just waiting for the 50,000miles mark.

Already changed my fluid,

I would change the filter/pan too since you have over 100k.

Good luck!

I disagree about the pan needing to be changed. I was told the filter is magnetic and keeps whatever metal particules there no matter what. Maybe the second time around change the filter and pan too but otherwise a tranny flush at the dealer at around 300$ tax in should do it for the first tranny oil change.

The magnet might hold metal particles, but the paper filter needs changing. Imagine changing your oil filter after 100k; what would it look like?! 100k, definitely change the filter.

I was talking KM and I assume you're talking miles. I agreed at 100k miles to change the filter too which should be at around every other oil change. Sorry for the confusion..
