Can you reserve a car without signing the complete deal?

I am looking into leasing a car which is at a dealership. Though I don't feel I am ready because of some things I am waiting on. I don't want this MY2010 to be sold to someone else during the period of my waiting which is expected to be about 3-6 weeks. I can lock in the rate, as the current rates are good till June end.

Is there a way I can put a small deposit like $500 and still not be liable to take the lease in case it does not work out on my end? Although, most likely everything will come through and I will happily go and lease it.

Then this deposit should get adjusted when I take the lease, else in the worst case I end up losing that $500 but I still have the chance of securing that car.

I am a noob at this. Can someone please help me out and tell me how it works?

Appreciate any responses and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I don't believe you will find a dealer willing to do a "lay-away" on any new 2010. The rebates and incentives for MY2010 are there to help dealers get rid of their inventory, not keep it around.

Figure out what you want and order one. By the time it comes in the MF should be better and you get the lower rate.

What dealer in its right mind would tie up a piece of inventory, pay floor plan on it, and let it age a month on a "maybe?"

Agree! It did not make sense in the first place, but I thought of posting and checking anyway, if such a thing ever happens. I believe I sort of twisted it from something which people pay when they order the car from a dealer.

I will just figure something out or order an MY2011 when I am all set.

Thanks for all the information guys.
