Odd sound when braking hard E92 M3...!
OK, I get a odd sound when braking hard...
The steering is not jumping about etc.... Sounds sort of like the noice you would get from a flat tyre ( but the tyre is fine )... Any ideas...? |

Does it sound like a metallic rubbing?

I get a nasty rubbing sound after this, I think it is the metal plate (behind the brake disc) rubbing against the back of the disc when it's hot

Wheel bearing gone would be more noticeable when under load ie. cornering.
Have you only just noticed this 'drone' and presumably the brakes haven't done this from new? From what speeds under hard braking, are you suffering any brake fade, glazed pads? Drilled and ventilated discs can produce more noise than 'lesser' discs. Take the car in for dealer to 'experience'. |

There will almost certainly be nothing wrong with the brakes - my M3 makes the same noise - The M3 is fitted with perforated compound discs.
![]() ![]() ![]() The manual states "The constructive design features of the perforated compound brake discs mean that noise can be heard during braking. However this noise generated has no adverse effects on the performance, operating reliability and resilience of the brakes. In order to maintain the braking system in good working order, it is a good idea to apply loads that correspond to the character of the vehicle at regular intervals PS: Ed, after putting my M3 onto the track at the M3cutters track day, my rears were also fouling on the back plates when very hot - just needed a bit of persuading back with a large flat blade screwdriver and a hammer ![]() |
