Which Oil in E46 330i

Sorry, I should know this, but can't seem to find it in the handbook and can't be bothered calling the dealer but my oil light has just come on and need to get some oil.

Which oil should I get and any idea where's best to get it (don't need much so online might prove ineffective with postage).

Cheers.

Rog, if not go to Opie Oils web site - click on your car and they will show all oils they stock for it. They even offer servicing kits with the filter, etc... if required.

Quick delivery and discounts for club/forum members.

i usually put in mobil1 0w-30 fully synthetic (as my dealer told me so when i had my e46).

For a 4 or 5 (cant remember which) litre tub, it costs £21 in costco (need membership), asda its £31 and halfords + everywhere else its £42+

having weighed up the cost saving and convenience I ended up buying a couple of litres of Halfords own oil today (never keep my cars long enough so thought sod it!). Anyway I ended up with 5W40 Fully Synthetic stuff for some reason when I wanted 5W30.

I can easily exchange it tomorrow but wondered what the difference is - will it be OK with 40 in it or should I really get the right stuff? Opie Oils recommends either 30 or 40 depending on manuforer.

Stupid question Im sure but I know sod all about oil.

I would put in the proper stuff Rog, the 40 is thicker than the 30 when the engine is up to temperature - not sure if this makes much difference, but not worth the risk really if you can pop back and easily swap it?

It's on route to work so not a problem so will swap it in the morning. Was just wondering what the difference was - I guessed consistancy was the key.

This is what Opie Oils suggests; just thought it was strange there is a mixture of 30s and 40s -:

Gulf Formula XLE 5w-30 fully synthetic engine oil (5w30)
Motul BMW SPECIFIC LL-04 5W-40 Gasoline and Diesel oil for EURO IV engines 100% Synthetic
Fuchs TITAN GT1 5W-40 synthetic engine oil
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 for modern engines
Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 Fully synthetic motor oil

By the time I'd added postage to Opie Oils prices it was the same as Halford (when own brand in the end which was half the price).

As a matter of interest Halfords website suggests (again a mixture) -:

Halfords 5W30 BMW/MB Fully Synthetic Oil 2L
Castrol Edge 5W30 Oil 1 Litre
Mobil 1 New Life 0W/40 Oil 1L
