BMW have some clever engineers. Listen to the you tube clip.

The sound racer is awesome! I'm tempted to get one.

In 10 -15 years time we will see a diesel M car i'm sure of it. Look at how far diesels have progressed in the last 10 years - if they can make a diesel rev like a petrol and sound like a petrol combined with the great torque then the only advantages to owning a petrol car will have gone. I have never owned a diesel car or even considered one but i believe that it is only a matter of time before it will be hard to ignore them when shopping for a new car.

Couldn't agree more on both points!
For me though the sound of a high revving petrol engine and much broader power band ( i believe the 335d only revs to 5K and even then there is not much point as there is enough power low down) up to 7000 rpm + makes a petrol more appealing - i am willing to sacrifice the better mpg for this alone. Hearing a nice petrol engine's motor (330i for example) as it homes in on the redline is something i enjoy more than outright pace (especially in these days of speed cameras etc) That said the 335d is an amazing motor and for most people would be a better choice than a 335i for example, but for some people no matter how fast a diesel is, until it can rev and sound as good as a petrol then it can never win your heart like a sweet petrol engine can. For the rest who are more concerned with mpg, easily accessible power and torque then the 335d is one of the best powerplants around no doubt.
