Dealer fixed turbo lag... then it came back... any similar experiences?

I went to the dealer about a month ago complaining of turbo lag, and they were able to remove it. It was great to finally have the car back the way it was, with really almost ZERO lag all the time.

But over the last month or so, the lag seems to have come back, unfortunately...

I remember similar threads about this in the past, but searching for it has been tricky.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes, they updated the wastegates and programming. It was so awesome... throttle no longer felt spongy for the first 1,000 rpm or so from a stop... it's like it was locking up quickly.

Once rolling, there has never really been much lag... like if you're cruising at 3,000 rpm, you can press the accelerator and it's pretty responsive. But from a stop, there is a lot of sponginess again.

At least I've felt it at it's best for like 2,000 miles of the 50,000 I've owned it. But it's a huge bait-and-switch and BMW should be punished for it!

Try driving aggressively...the ECU is "adaptive", and if you drive conservatively, it will react the same way until you do some aggressive driving. At least, this has been my experience.

You probably were just feeling cleared adaptations, not the new programming itself. It's probably re-adapted to you again, and now feels sluggish or weak from a stop. My car's the same way, and it's a 330i. It's not lag you're feeling.

There's a common DIY for how to clear adaptations by holding your throttle down, but I'm on the fence about whether it's for real or not. I've never seen any formal documentation for it, from BMW or otherwise, and my service shop says it's nonsense as well.

You're best bet is to do what the poster above said - drive hard for a bit. It'll likely perk up.

Hmmm, I don't think it's the adaptations, since I always drive in the manual mode. I think the adaptations are just shifting timing adjustments.

What I'm talking about is 2nd gear behavior from a stop. But maybe the adaptations include that... I will reset and see. I do try to drive reasonably day-to-day, and then more aggressively when I'm out on a weekend drive.

Thanks!
