Tyre Ratings?
I know this has been discussed before, but does anyone know the legalities of tyre ratings?
For example, I'm looking for new tyres and the SUV tyre plaque says 104Y (900kg, 300km/h). This greatly limits the tyre selection, whereas I can get some cheaper pirelli's that are 108W (1000kg, 270km/h). Is this a car manufacturer specification or will do I have to get 300km/h rating for insurance, even though the max speed limit is 110km/h |

Depends on your insurer.. Most companies require you to swap tyres at a minimum of "like for like", so Speed & Load rating must be equal, or greater.
Having said that, most of them will allow you to deviate from this as long as you notify them (much like the whole RF vs Non RFT saga!).. just make sure you have the change noted onyour policy, and ask for an updated policy agreement to be posted to you, reflecting this change.. just in case the worst does happen! Legalities wise, in WA you must have tyres that exceed the requirements of the car (ie if the car has a max weight (including payload) of 2,000KG, your tyres must be rated above 500kg.. I'm not sure how much by though (iirc its 20% but dont quote me).. Unsure on the east coast. Quote:

AAMI said as long as the tyre is the same size, the rating doesn't worry them. The representative checked with their manager who confirmed this. Not what I was expecting to be honest...

I'm sure there won't be an issue but I would get it in writing or an endorsement on the policy. Cheers.. |

For example. My Toyo T1R 275/30/19 are $650 in shops here and I got them for $460.
Pirelli Rosso 265/45/ZR20 are approx $630 here and approx $450 down south. Settled on the Pirelli Scorpion Zeros for $325ea delivered. Similar to Rosso's but will get more milage Last edited by MFKN3; 07-08-2010 at 07:01 PM.. |

I dunno - it isn't just speed. Aren't the tyres' treads, compounds and sidewalls are developed to perform - brake, grip, handle - better and not just go fast in a straight line?
