Finally got my wastegates fixed
Been putting it off for a year because I didn't want them messing with my ECU. But I couldn't take the noise anymore but found an awesome SA, Rick, at Herb Chambers in Boston and he came through big time.
Tech's write-up: "CUST STATES WASTE NOISE HEARD AT IDLE AND WORSE COASTING TO STOP, DOES NOT HAPPEN UNDER ACCELERATION Turbocharger's faulty Verified customer's concern. Found wastegate rattle at idle, all the way about to 4500 RPMs. Read out fault memory. Found fault codes 3100 and 30FF in DME. Following the test module for function test of the turbochargers, test module gets stuck on the part where you check vacuum and will not let you continue. Following SIB 12 28 07, Found vacuum to be good. Removed turbochargers as per SIB 12 28 07 to perform measurements listed in RA 11 65 580 and see if it is wastegate actuator or armature issue. Adjusted wastegates at -200 mbar, then checked adjustment at -500 mbar. When adjusting, the actuator adjustment is fully bottomed out, and still the seat doesn't sit well. This is due to the excessive lateral play in the armature itself. When checking the seat at -500 mbar, found that I could put a .406 mm feeler gauge between the seat and the wastegate at the upper edge, keeping the wastegate open when it should be closed. The pin passes the 1.5 mm drill bit test but just barely. The pin size is 6.25mm. As per SRT 9/09, the turbochargers are faulty due to the gap in the disc. Submitted PuMA Case. received authorization to replace turbochargers. Replaced turbochargers. Bled cooling system. Cleared fault memory and engine adaptions. Test drove. Test drove OK." Turbos were $700 each, total for the wastegate problem = $1265. |
