Steering Humming when turning / low speed?
Hi all;
For the past couple of days when I commute to work in the morning my E90 makes a strange low level hum (almost like a very low mechnical whine) starting from the right hand turn I make out of my road, it does disappear after a while (I do 100 mile round trip a day) or I turn my radio up LOL But seriously I had a Google around and some point to this being the Power Steering pump, I nipped out to check the Power Steering Fluid level and sure enough theres not a lot of fluid in there at all (it's a tank with a green plastic cap marked CHF 11S with 2 lines) it's way below the bottom line. Thinking of finding some CHF 11S fluid, funny not a lot of places sell them. Now I have had the whole steering rack replaced in January this year (I skidded on ice on the way to work and hit a kerb really badly)..should I call BMW instead as the Fluid level shoudn't drop so soon after a repair? Most of all is my Bimmer safe to drive such long distances until resolved or do I plead to my boss I need to work from home until this is sorted? Wil

I would expect the PAS fluid would be a normal ATF Dexron III spec - but I can't be sure - which you can get from any motor factor or indeed Halfords.
Might be the easier option rather than taking time off work...... I don't have the software here *cough* to be able to look up what fluid you need

Will have a look. Although I'm a bit worried about the workmanship when they changed my Steering Rack, I've been told that PAS fluid shouldn't go low unless there's a leak somewhere...so will get the dealer to look at it anyway. However, worth trying to get some PAS fluid to top up in the meantime anyway !
