I use Z2 on my wheels just like the paint. It makes a huge difference in how easy it is cleaning the wheels - i.e. the Zaino car wash will be just fine...

Poor Boys Wheel wax. About every 6 months I pull the wheels, clay them, then re-seal with PB. In between I use a PB cleaner and a dobie to clean the rims, and scrub the sidewalls.
No, I'm not a phanboi, I just use PB for those two applications. Z2 goes on the paint, and 303 on anything plastic/ette.

P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner. It's the DI monthly special, $20 for a 1L bottle (You'll also need a spray head).

Once they are clean, I second the idea of putting a paint sealant over the wheels. I've used JetSeal (same as what I put on the rest of the car) and it worked great. For months, the brake dust sprayed off with the hose. I've heard great things about Poorboys Wheel Sealant.

Get them cleaned up with a good wheel cleaner like P21S. Then you might even want to clay and polish them. If they're painted, treat them just like the paint on your car. Once you've got them nice/clean, top them off with a sealant. Once the sealant is on there, they'll be much easier to clean. I would just use soap/water to clean after applying a sealant. Otherwise, a wheel cleaner will break down the sealant much faster.

I love Sonax, but the P21s does a very good job too (especially if you keep the wheels reasonably clean). Definitely go for some sealant and/or wheel wax too. The EZ-Detail brush DI offers is great at getting the inner barrels, and the Swissvax Wheel Brush from DD is great for around the lugs and tighter areas.
