I have 70% geothermal tint to help reduce heat and me getting sunburn. Can only notice it unless you have polarized glasses, which I don't wear since I work in another type of cockpit.

Unless you've had a car with a tinted windshield, you have no basis for your "this is stupid" opinion... I've had 20% on every car and truck I've ever owned. The windshield is the least noticeable reduction in visibility at night as the headlights strongly overcome them. If you're apprehensive..just do 35%..it's hardly noticeable and cuts down the heat in the summertime. There's nothing worse than getting into your car and it's 150 degrees inside with the seats 200 degrees.
The only problem anyone I know has had with tint is backing up into a pitch black parking spot with 5% tint on all the windows... everything lighter than that is far from difficult. Go for it! |

His tint allows about 18% of light through. Most dark sunglasses are in the same range. Put those dark glasses on and try to drive at night, in parking garages and the like. How many pedestrians would he overlook driving with that tint at night? |

Here's an easy way to resolve this question.
Aside from the fact that tinted windshields are illegal in every state (aside from legitimate medical exemptions,) try this for a week. Go out and buy yourself the darkest sunglasses you can find (they'll be around 20%.) Then, whenever you get in your car, put them on - rain, snow, sleet, sun, moon etc. Do this day and night. Drive your normal routine. Back into parking slots, parallel park, go into parking garages etc. Drive on the highway, country roads, city streets and in your subdivision at night. Drive places where there is no street lighting and make sure you try this at night during heavy rain as well. If you ever need to take your glasses off in order to see better remember that you can't remove the windshield tint. If you ever have the feeling that it is unsafe then remove the glasses immediately. We don't want you getting into an accident or hitting a pedestrian. In a way this is one of the few mods that you can try out before you actually screw with your car. |

Contrary to what might seem logical, it is much easier to see out of the side windows when the front windshield is tinted. If you have 20 or even 35 on the side windows and a clear windshield...looking out of the sides is somewhat difficult.. Mostly because your eyes are adjusted to the amount of light coming in from the windshield, and also because your peripheral vision is getting light in whilst your trying to look outwards. Therefore, it is much easier (thus safer) to see out of a car with a tinted windshield than a car with tinted sides and clear windshield.
Here's a couple ways to test (if you have tinted sides and clear windshield: Simply sit normally in the drivers seat and evalutate how easy it is (and how quickly you're able) to see out the sides. Then, go in the backseat and look backwards, as if the rear window is the windshield and rear sides are...the sides. You'll should see how this works. Another way to test this, is in your home. Although it is dealing with the light source inside the vehicle as opposed to outside, it is still valid, as there is much more light being let in by a clear windshield vs. tinted. In your house, apartment or mobile home, look out of your windows with lights on..see a reflection of yourself? Easy to see outside? Not really, huh? Then turn the lights out...much easier, huh? It sounds strange, but this phenomona does hold some water. |

I just got 50% tint all around (not windshield) as I don't like to go any darker. It is light enough that I don't see it being a problem if someone (who has good eye site to begin with) putting it on the windshield. I wouldn't do it , but I wouldn't call it stupid either. For example, if I had to do a lot if night time driving on a single lane highway where I had to look at other people's head lights coming at me in the next lane ( as I used to do a few years ago), I would even seriously consider tinting my front windshield with something like 50% as a safety improvement.

I'm going to be getting a similar tint - 75%. I've been in a few cars with it and visibility isn't diminished at all, especially at night.
