Anyone know anything about tyres for a 09 320i?
Hi
I have a stock standard 2010 black 320i. As u probably know they come with very ordinary 16inch runflat tyres. I wanted something more exciting, and I approached (a rather disinterested) service centre enquiring about upgrading the wheels. I almost fell over when they quoted me almost $1000 per 17inch mag + the cost of a run flat tyre. I can get a nice set of mags from the local B Jane T marts, but they cant out a runflat tyre on the mags. So I would have to risk driving without a spare - or put a spare tyre in the boot. Does anyone know if I can get a spacesaver for this model? (its an auto if that helps). Or - any ideas where in Sydney I can get a decent looking (reasonably prices) set of mags that can take a runflat tyre?? I hope someone knows!! thanks in advance |

Yes. vgr02 got a nice tyre & wheel package from Tempe Tyres in Sydney for a 2009 e90 320i M-Sport. They look pretty good with that OEM look.
Rims are 19in 225M replicas, staggered fit: Front 19x8 ET34 225/35 Rear 19x9 ET37 255/30 I am pretty sure Tempe ships Australia wide. see link below for more detail: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=414790

Spacesaver spare you can get from BMW - I paid $130 for mine including tyre, fitting etc. Jack and wheelbrace are cheaper from an auto parts store.
If going to 19s or even 18s you might find RFTs a bit of a shock (ride and cost!) after 16s. Might be worth looking out for a set of used OEM 17's - they do seem to pop up from time to time.

does it void the warranty if you switch the run-flats to normal tyres?
say if you were to ditch the run-flats but didnt carry a spacesave spare, would you still be covered by the BMW roadside assist if you have a puncture? |

Don't even consider putting runcraps back on. Also they have to be replaced if you get a flat anyway.
Put on conventional tyres and get an emergency inflation like they give with an M3 which they don't curse with runcraps to start with. The kit has goo and a compressor to inflate your tyre if you get a flat - and don't buy it from BMW, get one from Autobarn etc for about $50. Most flats are nails which leak slow. I had one the other day. Sensor went off and I noted the tyre was down about 8psi (I could see the nail) so I organised a repair asap. It cost me $25. It would have cost me $600 for a new tyre (probably $1200 for two actually) if I had runflats. AND NO IT DOES NOT EFFECT INSURANCE. INSURANCE REQUIRES ROADWORTHY TYRES ONLY. I doubt BMW roadside covers flats as they expect you to drive to a tyre place with runflats. PS: if you want the security of a spare VE spares fit also but you will need a jack, lever etc. Kit is simpler

As a sudden loss of pressure at speed might have safer consequences on a Run-Flat, I notified my insurance company (BMW Insurance/Allianz) and would suggest this is the sensible thing to do. There was no change to the premium.
Not sure how it could null warranty - if anything as the non-RFT are lighter and transmit less shock to the suspension and cabin it ought to assistwith longevity of all components. Certainly a couple of little trim fizzes have gone away since I made the swap.....

If you go with aftermarket rims, you don't have a choice to put on run flats as RFT rims need a special internal design to accomodate a run flat tyre.
Whether you go with a goo and compressor solution or a space saver option is up to you. The last 3 years I had a the goo and compressor and I was happy with that as I had my origional wheels at home as a backup. I now sold my factory wheels and also the wheels I had on prior to these so I have no back up option in case I shred a tyre or crack a rim (never have in all my years ...but ......). I just felt I needed to have a space saver now - just my way of risk management and allows me to keep using the car even if only to get a puncture repaired. There is no right or wrong solution but just what you end up feeling comfortable with. (actualy - I have both solutions now) Brisbane BMW quoted me about $250 for the space saver wheel and tyre but I bought a VE HSV space saver for less than half that. |

If you want to use run-crap tyres, I think the best option is original BMW rims. These are the only rims that are properly designed for RFT safety tyres, and there is no shortage of them second hand. I know Jax quickfit in Bondi Junction used to have many sets of these second hand in their showroom, so maybe give them a call as well as other second hand parts dealers.
If considering 18" and 19" wheel and tyre size, you might like to read the survey here. Also consider that going for 19" means the tyres are going to cost more than 17" or 18". EDIT: My personal suggestion is that you take the oppurtunity to change to non-RFT. When using low profile tyres there is a big difference in ride quality. Unpleasant steering feedback known as 'tramlining' is another good reason to avoid them. Last edited by John_01; 08-31-2010 at 02:12 AM.. |
