There is the same amount of room as an N54 with the turbos/dp's removed.
The hardware has never been the problem, making a manifold/turbo combo is no different on this car than any other car. The problem exists when you want to raise the power level beyond the fueling capabilities of the stock system (450-500whp?). It only makes sense to go to a single turbo if you are planning on making much more power than this because the stock turbos provide the broadest torque curve, and most power under the curve that the stock fuel system can handle. Putting a big single on a stock fueled system would be stupid, as you'd still have a 450-500whp limit, but you'd lose a significant portion of your power/torque in the daily driving range (1500-3500rpm). Until we get some upgraded DI injectors, or some way to seamlessly integrate additional port fuel injectors, big singles really don't make any sense. |

Actually, there might be an advantage for autocross/roadrace uses as a big single could make the same peak power at high rpm but at lower boost, keeping temps down. It would also allow you to stay in gears longer with power on tap.
But for your average dragstrip/street driver, it's kind of lose/lose until there are fuel options. |

I would look toward companies like Forced Performance to make a stock-like upgrade. In the EVO community that I used to be a part of, you could slap an upgraded wheel in a stock or ported stock housing, achieve amazing gains, and keep spool as good or better than stock (with timing control).

Not only will they have to deal with making a bigger twin scroll, but from what the N55 manual shows, the turbo and manifold are one piece, they would have to fabricate a whole new manifold and turbo... This is no easy task, I can imagine

Judging from the N54 turbo upgrades, N55 upgrades should be out just in time for 2012-2013.

I think the turbo upgrades are just not necessary for the N54 at least. Since 130whp (+50% !) can be added to the stock power with stock turbos and a few bolt-ons and maintain stock-like driveability, why should anyone bother ? Not to mention that 170whp can be added with stock turbos and full bolt-ons + meth.
